From control panel or program menu’s of windows there is a configuration
dialog that enables SoftICE at boot. The problem with doing this is that
there is the possibility that the default buffer size can get filled very
quickly and lose some of the data. If you just add a simple ASSERT(0); in
driver entry to force a halt. This should take you into SoftICE so you can
take a look at your code. Pressing Cntrl ‘D’ should make the code and the
system continue.
Does this help?

WinDbg version 6.0.0007. It’s free. Well … you do need a serial cable and
a NULL modem between a target and a host computer, but what the hey … at
$900 for SoftIce you can buy a brand new DELL and save $300!!!
You can use it to debug SoftIce, even.

Basically, my softice is loading during system boot
up. however it has a type system_service_start in the
registry. My driver has type system_boot_start, hence
it loads before softice does and i am unable to debug
my driverentry.

Problem with this is will the Boss let you have a couple of P.C’s on the
same desk. How on earth do you justify that one? let alone a serial cable…
:-0. maybe your an alien with four hands to use both keyboards at the same
time, cool
Also WinDbg doesn’t debug the ‘inf’ file that never works ether so there

WinDbg works fine with vmware-emulated PC so it makes presence of two boxes
on your desk
almost invisible. And you still have only one keyboard.
Boss not allowing you to do your job is a very strange one though…

We can make SoftICE load immediately after ntoskrnl and the hal, check with
our support people and they’ll help you doing it. Now, with SoftICE you can
run on the same machine, and this is not a cost issue, there’s things that
are better done right on the machine we’re testing, I may not want to have
to rely on a working piece of I/O to be able to debug. A keyboard and a
monitor, that should be all one should need.

Justification … some crashes have been known to hose the entire system …
requiring a complete format and reinstall. (If he/she/it is too cheap to buy
a target for debug, do you REALLY think he/she/it is going to spring for
proper backup?) Developing device drivers one suffers a virtual plethora of
crashes. Unless one is perfect. And generally perfect people do not last
long amongst all us imperfect people.
Actually … my Boss had no problem with it when I handed him the purchase
order for SOFTICE and a purchase order for another machine. I think he
mumbled something about “Damn, I can save $300 by buying another computer.”
Oh … I currently use a UP system for development and have 2 dual processor
remotes that I use for testing and debug. Lemme see … to my left is a
monitor and a mini-tower with 2 350 Mhz P-II, 500M RAM and lots of Gigs for
storage. To my right is a copy of what’s on my left. Also on my right is a
JBOD with 2 80 Gig HDDs and 2 35 Gig HDDs. The monitor on my right is
sitting on top of an ANCOR fibrechannel switch which connects to the JBOD
and the 3 ISP2300 fibre channel cards in the 2 targets. The system I use for
development and building is a 500M 1 Gig P-III with DVD, CD-RW and TONS of
HDD space. All of this is an evolution from that original target PO.
My fibre channel bus driver loads in the “System Bus Extender Group”, and I
have never had any difficulty in entering it’s DriverEntry routine or the
DriverEntry routine of the SCSI miniport that attaches to it. I did have to
connect the serial cables to the Host and the targets, and I did have to
edit the targets Boot.ini so that WinDbg can connect to them. I also have to
copy the PDB files for the drivers to the Symbols path. But … I never once
had to call Microsoft so that they could give me the “magic” to make WinDbg
debug a boot driver.
I can use WinDbg to debug SoftIce. Goo’ness gracious … can I use SoftIce
to debug WinDbg? Now that thought is making my head hurt … Who’s on first
… Arrrgggghhhh!!!

Max
Definately fella. no need to apologise. I was a bit
intrigued by the vmware idea. doesn’t it require loads
of resources?

Yes, but does it work under wine?-)

Since Wine is Win32 layer on top of Linux (and I hope other UNIXen), it cannot run NT kernel.
BTW - Sun had Win16 emulator on Sparcs as early as in 93. It was called WABI. It was possible to run Word from it.

Yes, other unixen, and some non-unixen systems. I’ve never asked if
it works under Windows.
Anyhow, WinDbg debugging a remote kernel should not need any kernel
services. It is debugging a *remote* kernel using a serial port, not
the local kernel. I suppose it would freak out anyhow because it also
supports debugging local processes, and that does typically require
O/S specific services.

I heard new version of vmware has repeatable resume feature. This means you
can save the state of virtual machine, load your driver, crash, resume, load
new version, crash, etc. Without slow and long rebooting procedure.
It’s interesting has anyone any experience with it?

Wow.
I am loading VMWARE on my dual 1.6 machine this weekend and give it a
whirl.
