XPSP1 checked build?

Hi all,
Is there any difference in installing a partial checked build
for XP and XPSP1? Are there separate kernel and hal files for the
service pack 1 build, or should I just use the ones included with the
original windowsXP checked build?

Thanks,
Matt

Get the slipstreamed XP + SP1 installation disc, and expand the hal and
kernel from there.

You ALWAYS want to use the ones from the service pack.

Now, having said that, you actually have to check (sorry!)… NTOSKRNL
almost always changes in a service pack (because there’s almost always at
least one change in the service pack to the O/S proper). Sometimes, only a
subset of HALs change from service-pack to service pack. So, HALACPI will
change, but HALAPIC might not. You have to check the HAL that matters to
you.

Specifically, in XP SP1, HAL, HALAACPI, HALACPI, HALAPIC, and HALMPS all
changed, as did NTOSKRNL, NTKNRLMP, NTKRNLPA, and NTKRPAMP. So, you need to
use the HAL and kernel image from the service pack.

Ok, that’s what I thought (this was hammered home after the blue screen
 ). However, it’s not immediately obvious to me where the kernel and
HAL are in the service pack disk in MSDN. Do I need this slipstreamed
disk that Phil mentioned, or can I scare it up from the SP1 files?

If you can find the compressed binaries in the SP files, you can use those.
I found it simpler to get the slipstreamed ISO image, burn it to a CD, and
expand the files I needed from there.

Beware that hotfixes may update the kernel and/or hal, and I’ve not heard of
anyone getting checked versions of hotfixes. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t
happen, but it’s been discussed here or on Windbg and nobody has reported
that they got the checked hotfix files prior to the release of the SP.
