Windows Server 2003 and Standby/Hibernate

I have a HP xw8200 test machine that I multi-boot for various versions of
Windows. Each OS version has its own partition.

When I load Windows XP from the MSDN onto this machine I get an OS that
supports Standby and Hibernation.

When I load Windows Server 2003 from the MSDN onto this machine I get an OS
that does NOT support Standby and Hibernation.

Same machine - just loaded different Windows flavor…

Does Windows Server 2003 simply not support Standby and Hibernation? Or, am
I missing something?

Thomas F. Divine

I think you have to explicitly enable hibernate on server2003. is there
a checkbox in powercfg.cpl that allows you to enable hibernate?

On XP there is a checkbox to enable Hibernation. On WS2003 it is not there.

Similarly, on XP the Power Options Power Schemes includes selection of
Standby choices. On WS2003 the Power Schemes does NOT include selection of
Standby choices.

Thomas,

Just checked: both “hibernate” and “stand by” options in a shutdown dialog
are
present on my w2k3s box.

A “hibernation” tab with an “Enable hibernation” checkbox is present in my
powercfg.cpl.

C:\hiberfil.sys is alive and well also, as is a open handle to it, owned by
“System”.

This is from deep dark very old recesses of my memory, but I believe if you
enable terminal server on W2K3, even just for administrative use, the power
options go away.

Thanks, Dan. I’ll check that. I know that I didn’t deliberately enable
terminal server myself.

a) buggy ACPI table in the BIOS
b) some video drivers disable power management.

Sorry, Dan, no, my previous note was written from inside a TS session (I
subscribed
to these lists from home and watch my home box through TS).

From my deep dark etc., I got power options when I was setting up the
UPS
and had to fiddle with settings (where?).

Sooner or later we will know whose deepness/darkness is deeper/darker:-)

Yes! It was when I was setting up my UPS that I ran into the issue. I
wanted the system to hibernate when the batteries got low, and there was no
way to enable hibernation.

My recollection was that the reason had to do with TS. Sorry, Thomas, if I
sent you on a wild goose chase.
