Windows 2008 and Hal

Does Windows Server 2008 still install a single-user or multi-user HAL based
on the number of detected processors, or is that ancient history? Does it
always installa multi-processor HAL now? Thanks.

I think that the UP kernels and HALs are gone from Vista up.

Windows has been MP only since Vista shipped. The HAL is still selected
during installation, but there is no uni-processor HAL variant anymore.

Thanks - thats what I figured, but good to have confirmation.

Tony,

One of the classic problems in Windows was that if you took a hard drive
from machine A and plugged it into machine B (with a different motherboard,
but otherwise compatible with the original machine, that is, not 64-to-32
bit or other weird attempts), Windows might or might not boot and might or
might not work. I had heard that Vista got around this by selecting a HAL
and/or Kernel at boot time, but never checked up on this rumor. I gather
this rumor is false.

False.

This is not a HAL issue - the same ACPI SMP APIC HAL is used for nearly all modern machines.

This is the boot disk controller’s issue, which is rather hard to solve. Video can degrade automatically to VGA, so it is not a major issue here.

This is not enabled by default (IIRC), but you can flip it on via bcdedit.exe /set {current} detecthal yes
