WinDBG For Mac OS X with VMware Fusion

Hello,

Does anyone try to use Mac Book Pro as the WinDBG debugger machine and
VMware Fusion running Windows as the target machine for kernel debugging?

I was wondering the fact that WinDBG can be running properly under Mac
using wine.

Thanks in advance!

@x9090

I do it every day. I kernel debug using Fusion and a USB to serial converter.

I know this exactly what you were asking, but may help. I have used a setup that has one windows session running the debugger and one as the target to debug a USB driver. There are instructions on the VMware website (connecting two virtual machines) but essentially a pipe is used on both sessions that use the same named file. Works like a charm.

Hello Veronica,

I found this page explained how to connect 2 virtual machines in order to
do kernel debugging, http://communities.vmware.com/message/748577

But how about using Mac as a host machine to run winDBG and debug Windows
running in virtual machines? I can’t seem to find any instructions on how
to setup that.

@Paul

Any chance you can describe how did you setup that?

Thanks!

It’s been discussed here before, and it does work, but it depends on where the Mac is. The Mac can run WinDbg in a Parallels session as the host, but that discussion was about 1/2 a year ago using 1394 to connect to the target. The main problem today is going to be the connection. If the Mac doesn’t have a 1394 or serial port you’ve got a problem

As I said, it was discussed here back in the fall, late summer, by a gentleman that had accomplished the task. I haven’t used my MacBook Air to run WinDbg, but it has the newer Thunderbolt port, not the Firewire port.

Alright guys, I got the idea now.

Basically I can either:

1.) Use 2 VM both running Windows guest OS in order to do the Windows
kernel debugging
2.) Use Boot Camp to boot Windows (not VM). I can then use it like a native
Windows machine.

Thank you for all the kind feedbacks and patience!

@x9090

I run Fusion (less than $50) on a Mac. I have a USB to serial converter. I am home right now and not at work so I don’t remember the brand name. It has a Mac driver. Under Fusion I am running Windows XP as a VM and all of my development work is done in this environment. I have a test machine with a serial port. I allow XP to control the serial port (click a setup checkbox) and it is COM3. That’s it. Easy peasy.

Hello Veronica,

I found this page explained how to connect 2 virtual machines in order to do kernel debugging, http://communities.vmware.com/message/748577

But how about using Mac as a host machine to run winDBG and debug Windows running in virtual machines? I can’t seem to find any instructions on how to setup that.

@Paul

Any chance you can describe how did you setup that?

Thanks!

Hello,

Does anyone try to use Mac Book Pro as the WinDBG debugger machine and VMware Fusion running Windows as the target machine for kernel debugging?

I was wondering the fact that WinDBG can be running properly under Mac using wine.

Thanks in advance!
