There’s been some (much?) griping about M$'s new “improved” Windbg for
2000. Is there a more recent/better Windbg version than 5.00.2127.1
dated 9/10/99 that I WON’T regret installing over this version? If so
where can I get it? My DVD drive died. Is the 10 May 00 version at
http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/installW2k.htm? the one giving everyone
trouble?

I think that opinion is divided about which of the “released” versions of
windbag is more useable. I personally favor the one reached from your link
below, while many people favor (if I recall the version number correctly
(iirtvnc)) 2127, which came with one of the many betas, like, iirtvnc,
beta2.
My other opinion about this is DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO USE WORKSPACES. Set
everything possible from the command line. Have a lot of little shortcut
desktop thingies that connect you and windbag and your target system as you
prefer.
Oh, and I think that Windbag: The Released Versions run better on NT4 than
W2K.
And finally: that’s New! Improved! Windbag!, not new “improved” windbg.

For NT4, I prefer WinDbg 5.00.1999 which works fine (spring 99).
The only bug was - never save the app state to the workspace if you have any
windows open. Loading such a workspace (saved with some windows) in the
future will result in WinDbg hang while connecting to the target.
So, your workspace must be saved after closing all windows.
