We recently acquired some P-IV machines that are using the latest hyper
threading technology from Intel and have SATA drives. Each of these machines
have 1GB RAM.
Windows 98 doesn’t boot up on these machines, some drivers fail, and only
safe mode works.
We disabled hyper threading.
Reduced memory to 512 MB (after some one told us that win98 memory manager
has problems with larger memory)
Tried using partitions of less than 8GBs.
But the problem lies.
Is there any one who can through some light on this issue? We need Win98 to
develop some application support.

Have you already tried to install W98 on an old CHS compatible HD and boot from that on your machine ? Also start with
a partition less or equal 2 GB.

Well, no, not on these P-IVs. Is the architecture of SATA so different that
CHS compatible OSs wont even install/run properly. I observed the same
problem with Norton Ghost 2003, which uses PC DOS to perform the imaging
operatins. With SATA they mess up real bad!!! Do the latest versions of
Ghost (ver 10.0) work with SATAs? Or is there any other way I can take the
image of the disk reliably?
Also start with a partition less or equal 2 GB.
I tried with a 512 MB FAT32 partition and the installation crashes after
detecting Plug and play. the infamous blue screen stating a fatal exception
0x0D has occured at 0148:00007554, the current application will be
terminated. BTW, during this installation the RAM installed was 1Gig, I hope
that is not a problem.
And you find this to be surprising? Imagine, an obsolete unsupported OS
doesn’t support new technology. Perhaps you should consider not trying
to install win98 on hyperthreaded P-IV systems that boot from SATA
controllers. Does the expression square peg into a round hole mean
anything?

I understand that mark. I just want to nail down the problem to it’s core.
Hyper threading definitely wont work with Win98. May be it is the SATA afte
all…
SATA and ATA may fall under the T-13 committee, but a SATA controller
ain’t an ATA controller. So will you try the same thing with 98 and . oohh
. let’s say SAS? After all SAS is SCSI, ain’t it?

By FAR, your best bet will be to install XP or 2003, then install
Virtual PC or VMware, and then install Win98 as a VM.

Here is a better product then Ghost, and it definitely supports SATA
