Neal (or any MS folk):

Just renewing my periodic plea for a Win2K Filter Manager Redistributable
that Neal promised below.

Ken,

As I stated recently the W2K filter manager redistributable will be
available a couple of months after the W2K URP is released. I am
assuming they will have a short beta of the package before it is
released to let some people try it out. I will confirm this.

Ken (and everyone else),

The decision has been made to create a redistributable version of the
filter manager changes for W2K in addition to the Security Rollup (SRP)
release which will go out on windows update.

The final redistributable will be built from the binaries released in
the SRP and will contain only those binaries needed for filter manager
support. The redistributable will not contain the entire SRP.

I am hoping to have a package available on the filter manager betaplace
site in the next couple of weeks.

Speaking of the Win2K Rollup (which includes the Filter Manager), do you
know if there are plans to make a redistributable available? It doesn’t
seem to be in the Beta release (that I could recognize, anyhow).

As has been stated many times on this site:

No currently released IFSKit contains filter manager support. The first
IFSKit to be released that will contain this support will be released
soon when Srv03 SP1 is released. Until it is released you can register
for the IFSKit beta at:

http://beta.microsoft.com
GuestID: Filtermgr

The filter manager has been or will be released for the following
versions of the OS

W2K SP4 Security Rollup (to be released later this year, beta currently
available via http://beta.microsoft.com with GuestID: Win2kURPTest)

XP SP2 (already released)

Srv03 SP1 (to be released very soon)

Longhorn (beta available later this year)

Hi All,

From which OS version of Windows are the Fltxxxx functions are supported
and
in with which DDK they are shipped. I went through document “Filter
Driver
Development Guide” from microsoft which speaks lot of things about
filter
driver development but I do not find any Fltxxx functions in my IFSKIT(
or
DDK) header files.

Any information is helpful.

No, FltMgr is not part of SP4. It is a part of the Update Rollup that was
released in June (and re-released in September). But the Update Rollup is
essentially a full-blown SP5 and many customers are slow to roll it out.
(It has in fact broken a number of software packages.) It’s also very
large.

So a redistributable with just the FltMgr would be a Very Nice Thing.

Must be going crazy here; but I remember reading something was changed
in w2k sp4. It wasn’t support
for IoCreateFileSpecifyDeviceObjectHint was it?

Am I losing my mind or was there a significant change in SP4(for W2K)?

Yes, SP4 was a significant SP, but it was released long before FltMgr was
available.

Must be going crazy here; but I remember reading something was changed
in w2k sp4. It wasn’t support
for IoCreateFileSpecifyDeviceObjectHint was it?

Am I losing my mind or was there a significant change in SP4(for W2K)?

(It has in fact broken a number of software packages.) It’s also very
large.

So a redistributable with just the FltMgr would be a Very Nice Thing.

Ken,

I thought the filter manager was included in sp4; am I mistaken or are
you looking for a seperate redist. that
can be added to w2k base threw sp3?

As I stated recently the W2K filter manager redistributable will be
available a couple of months after the W2K URP is released. I am
assuming they will have a short beta of the package before it is
released to let some people try it out. I will confirm this.

As has been stated many times on this site:

No currently released IFSKit contains filter manager support. The
first IFSKit to be released that will contain this support will be
released soon when Srv03 SP1 is released. Until it is released you can
register for the IFSKit beta at:

W2K SP4 Security Rollup (to be released later this year, beta currently
available via http://beta.microsoft.com with GuestID: Win2kURPTest)

XP SP2 (already released)

Ted:

Hmm… That *sort of* addresses the issue, but raises more questions than
it answers, such as:

Does it mean that there will *not* be a redistributable created for Win2K?
(A big disappointment if true, and contradicts what Neal said below.)

Are the files listed sufficient to install FltMgr in Win2K? If so, are we
free to create our own merge modules?

BTW, you lost me when referring to the DPM beta. It runs on top of Windows
Server 2003 and FltMgr is part of SP1 for Server03.

The first I had heard of this “hotfix” was last summer when I got the DPM
beta. If you wanted to run DPM on W2K, you applied this kit (on SP4). At
that time it was generally available for download to DPM beta testers.

My guess was that this is the so-called “redistributable” as MS needed it
for DPM. Further more, I believe they just weren’t doing the hotfix for us
filter manager users.

Let me clear up some confusion. This KB article is not for the
redistributable. It simply is to let people know that filter manager
was part of the W2K URP.

We are still planning on releasing the redistributable.

I agree that it has taken longer then originally planned. I pinged the
group in India that is doing this, unfortunately this week was a holiday
and most people were out. I will have a status update on the
redistributable at the PlugFest next week (14-18).

Subject: RE: [ntfsd] Fltxxxx functions()

Neal:

Speaking of the Win2K Rollup (which includes the Filter Manager), do
you know if there are plans to make a redistributable available? It
doesn’t seem to be in the Beta release (that I could recognize,
anyhow).

Thanks,
Ken

As has been stated many times on this site:

No currently released IFSKit contains filter manager support. The
first IFSKit to be released that will contain this support will be
released soon when Srv03 SP1 is released. Until it is released you can

register for the IFSKit beta at:

http://beta.microsoft.com
GuestID: Filtermgr

The filter manager has been or will be released for the following
versions of the OS

W2K SP4 Security Rollup (to be released later this year, beta currently
available via http://beta.microsoft.com with GuestID: Win2kURPTest)

XP SP2 (already released)

Srv03 SP1 (to be released very soon)

Longhorn (beta available later this year)

Subject: [ntfsd] Fltxxxx functions()

Hi All,

>From which OS version of Windows are the Fltxxxx functions are
>supported
and
in with which DDK they are shipped. I went through document “Filter
Driver Development Guide” from microsoft which speaks lot of things
about filter
driver development but I do not find any Fltxxx functions in my IFSKIT(
or
DDK) header files.

Any information is helpful.

Thanks,
Kedar
