WDK download

Wanting the latest WDK, I went to the MSDN Subscriber downloads section.
After looking through the obvious option of “Developer Tools”, and the
slightly less obvious option of “Tools and Resources”, I find that the
WDK is actually an Operating System. Fine. Now I have a choice of three
things which “include WDKs”:

  • WDK for Windows Server 2008 (x86, x64, ia64) - DVD (English)
  • Windows Driver Kit (6001.18002) (x86, x64, i64) - DVD (English)
  • Windows Driver Kit (6001.18002) (x86, x64, i64) - DVD (English)

The file name of the first one includes 6001.18001 and the file has the
earliest date, so I guess that’s an earlier version. The other two have
identical titles and identical .iso file names, but different sizes,
hashes and posting dates.

I assume one of these two is the real 6001.18002 WDK; I’m interested to
know which one (and what the other one is). Does anyone know how to
tell? In the absence of any other clue I’ll go with the most recent,
though there’s no particular reason why a wrong one couldn’t have been
posted after the right one.

I would have asked the “Online Concierge - available 24/7 except
holidays” if it weren’t for the red message saying “chat not currently
available, try later”.

Thanks for any thoughts,
jjf

This is so sad; not you, msft.

There’s actually a couple of others that you missed that would have made
the whole thing even more confusing, and that doesn’t the count four of
five programs on connect.microsoft.com that are all named something like
‘Windows Beta,’ that at least used to offer some version of a WDK also,
though I think that have been removed now, except for the not generally
publicly available ones, like that for Windows 7.

I have no idea unfortunately of which is the REAL one, but I will
forward this one to someone at msft, but for the moment, I guess I would
just go with the the S2K8 iso that has the later date. If you really
want the latest version

Good luck,

mm

I forgot something. I’ve actually used the concierge service, mostly
just to see what it would be like, and much to my surprise, it worked,
and they were quite helpful. Of course, when I tried, it was actually
available, so I don’t know what happened.

Sorry about the confusion. I’ve passed this along to the WDK Release Manager. I can’t tell you which is the right download in MSDN (I don’t know). However, you can get the right 18002 from the WDK Connect site. For information about how to download from Connect, see: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/WDK/WDKpkg.mspx

Look down to the middle of the page.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jen and Martin. I got the one from Connect; it has a different
filename, but is the same file as the most recent one on MSDN Subscriber
Downloads.

The Connect write-up has a little confusion of its own though. In two
places (at least) it says “This WDK is build number 6001.18002. It
replaces 6001.18000 and 6001.18002”. Perhaps it should read “…
replaces the other 6001.18002” ;).
