W2K3 SP1 RC2 VS2005 performance

Has anyone experienced serious performance degradation running Server 2003
SP1 in a Virtual Server 2005 virtual machine?

As an example, Server 2003 with no service pack goes from power up to Start
button in 3.5 minutes. An identical virtual machine running SP1 takes 21
minutes to do the same thing. This is with no 3rd party drivers loaded;
just bare Windows.

Task manager reports 100% CPU utilization for several seconds when trying
to do even the most minor tasks, like clicking the start button.

Kernrate shows about 20% of the time being spent in processr.sys, but
nothing else that appears unusual.

This is on topic (IMNSHO), because I am trying to use W2K3 SP1 for
minifilter development. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? It’s
really slowing down my development.

Thanks,

  • Dan.

Dan,

you can use VMware Workstation instead of Virtual Server.

Dmitriy Budko, VMware

IO performance through either of the Microsoft VM products is, at best,
brutally slow, although your case seems to be extreme. What kind of hard
drive do you have the VM hosted on? I’ve seen some performance anomalies
when hosting on SCSI drives…

For what you’re doing, I have found vmware to be a vastly superior product.

Hi Dave,

The host drive is a 160GB IDE, dedicated to virtual machines.

Remember that my performance comparison is between identical virtual
machines, on the same host and host drive. The only difference is SP1.

Thanks,

  • Dan.
