Vista WDK documentation

> 3. What do people think of “document explorer” the tool that presents the

Junk tool, and junk search.

By far worse then previous MSDN Library viewer. Reason: slower. Maybe this is
because the previous library viewer was unmanaged, and Document Explorer is
C#/.NET.

As about search… well, I think that due to some esoteric reasons MS are just
uncapable of producing the good search solution.

The Windows Live Search on msdn.microsoft.com cannot find nothing for me, not
even the very common Windows function names like CreateFile, CoCreateInstance
or SendMessage.

Google for search+msdn.microsoft.com for content display is better, but… the
frameset with the ActiveX control on msdn.microsoft.com is way too slow to
load.

As about the search in desktop MSDN Library viewer - it was always very bad,
even before Document Explorer. First, searching for several words seems to be
always OR, which is always not what I need. Explicitly saying AND - does not
work.

Second - the relevance is very bad. For instance, Windows CE docs were always
(since 2003 or so) more relevant then Windows ones. I dunno why.

idea what in the world it could do", I’ve used this with a number of

Any version of MSDN Library viewer had the Sync Contents button, but it was
moved from one place to another on each release and its icon is also changed.
In modern Document Explorer, the icon is not recognizeable at all.

It seems there is a general consensus about it. This makes me wonder how MS usability lab (if any) works.

I tried a couple of searches on http://search.msdn.microsoft.com/
search/ to see if this was still true. Take a look at these results:

http://search.msdn.microsoft.com/search/Default.aspx?
brand=msdn&query=CreateFile
http://search.msdn.microsoft.com/search/Default.aspx?
brand=msdn&query=CoCreateInstance
http://search.msdn.microsoft.com/search/Default.aspx?
brand=msdn&query=SendMessage

The #1 result is right each time. I also tried a few DDI’s and the
engine finds them correctly as well.

What you say certainly used to be true, but this particular search
engine seems to work pretty well.

So here is another example of usability. As mentioned Doc Explorer is slow
to load. How slow? This morning I went to answer a question here and DE
wasn’t loaded and I needed to look up the KMDF equivalent to a WDM
interface. So I start DE, sit there staring at absolutely nothing happening
for a while, realize I am in Doc Explorer startup mode, and decide to go
upstairs and make myself a nice iced coffee, which I do. I then amble
downstairs back to my office, sit down, surf a bit, have a drink of the
coffee I just made, and then there it is: Doc Explorer, obviously operating
on Jamaican time, is now ready to operate. No problem. I can operate on
Jamaican time too. In fact what is the rush? DE is gently telling us to slow
down and smell the coffee. Admire the view. Relax.

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Ver. 2 will come with [downloadable smell of] coffee.

Usability blunders appear to be cropping up all over Microsoft.

The new PowerPoint confronts me with this imponderable dialog box every time
I save a flle:

“Press the ESC key to cancel saving the document”

[Cancel]

The dialog has no other controls than the single Cancel button. I have no
idea what pressing that Cancel button might do, nor should I. Instead I
have a blinking contest with the dialog box. So far it always blinks first
and disappears.

Which QA team blessed that feature on its way out the door?

Oh man, if it weren’t for “Sync with TOC”, I would have abandoned software development years ago…

Ages ago, “Sync with TOC” was bound (by default!) to Control-S, and I used it every minute of the day. At some point, someone decided that was too intuitive, and it became Control-Shift-S, or something, I don’t know, I don’t care – every time I install any version of MSDN, I immediately rebind Control-S to “sync with TOC”. Eventually, someone even removed the *new* binding, so that there is no default binding for sync! I really don’t understand that – sync is the most useful feature of Doc Ex, and is the only thing that makes navigating such a huge collection possible. (Because the index is just “ok”, and search is worthless.) I cannot think of a single good reason to remove access to such a useful feature.

I always rebind Control-S to sync, Control-C to contents, and Control-I to index. I can’t stand the default bindings – Control-Alt-F1?! Try typing that with one hand – it’s really awkward. No default binding for sync?? Whatever. It’s like someone actively sought the worst bindings possible. At least you can still change key bindings.

I find the argument that “It’s corporate policy!” to be really disturbing, if it’s true. Corporate policy should be thrilling customers, who in this case are developers, not end-users, and I have never met anyone who was remotely happy with Doc Explorer. Including me.

[There is a “Sync with TOC” button in Document Explorer]

Great! Bob, thank you very much for the helpful hint!

I actually did look for an option to sync the TOC to the section
displayed, but found nothing. Probably I am too menu-centric - expecting
all functions to be available via menu entry (and - if reasonable -
accelerator key, as proposed by the MS style guides), with only
shortcuts as additional optional symbols in the toolbar.

Did anybody actually try to invoke the Document Explorer online help?
Go ahead… try it!

My suggestion to whoever programmed the MS Doc Explorer would be

  • to synchronize TOC with the displayed section by_default,
  • and let ppl. switch this behaviour off (via the option menu)
    – with an explanation for the manual sync button popping up when they
    switch it actually off.

Thanks,
-Hagen

One other thing I hate about DE: when you double click on something in

something, or use the scrollbar. DE is not the only software that

I’ll echo that: I am a keyboard addict, and DE sucks for that. I’m
constantly finding that the wrong pane has focus, and I haven’t
figured out quite how to fix it.

I submitted an official bug report on this before VS2005 was released.
MSFT confirmed the problem, and said it would be fixed in the next
