Well it works … sort of. I get 2 or 3 BSODs on the laptop daily in
UPnPFramework. Not to mention the general loss of connect that happens at
odd times, or the target hanging doing a send to an unresponsive host …
which will probably BSOD when I reset it to clear the comm hang.
I think a lot of the problem is Belkens drivers. WHQL warned me too, with
its bitch boxes about Belkens drivers not having been certified. I certainly
can attest to that, and understand why Belken/Etek did not get them
certified.
Thinking it might be 2000/XP compatability, I went to Belkens URL and
downloaded the XP drivers. While they did work better than the 2000 drivers
that came on the install CD, there still the problems mentioned above. I
then looked at the dates of the files … August of 2001. Anyone got later
BelkenEtek USB to Serial drivers that work reliably on XP?

Well, here’s part of your problem right there. Turn off the UPnP stuff,
unless you really have a use for it. Disable the UPnP Device Host and the
SSDP Discovery services. If none of your network connected devices
disappears, you didn’t need it. If something does disappear, you can
probably connect it another way.

FWIW, I have a Belkin F5U109 usb-> serial adapter with drivers from
Belkin (12/7/2002 v1.20.1207.1) and upon booting the target, I’ll see

Opened \.\com1
Waiting to reconnect…
Connected to Windows NT 4 1381 x86 compatible target, ptr64 FALSE

And I never get any further. Can’t break into the target, etc.
Looks like the Belkin adapters/drivers could just be junk… I know the
adapter works though, because I’ve controlled another machine (an alpha)
over the serial port using this adapter… I’ve mucked with settings in
the driver’s properties pages, but to no avail…

Hmmm, makes you wonder if the Belkin driver boys and girls co-habit this
list, or ever taken a course from Walter. Maybe they should.
I have been using the F5U103 set of drivers. I cut the bps down from 115.2K
to 57.6K and thus far (knock on wood) I have had a good day of debug. Have
you lowered the bps, Sean?

Yah I even went down to 9600 (cringe!) but got the same results… I
just snagged the latest XP drivers off the Belkin site… I’ll give
those a go and see if it improves the situation any… I don’t use the
usb adapter for my main debugging machine, but I figured it would be
nice if I’m ever visiting a client and want to do any debugging or
something from my laptop…
Now if everyone would just force the inclusion of firewire devices on
all machines and make all machines XP SP1 or better, it would make my
life much easier

Well I got the latest driver from the Belkin site for my adapter, and
it’s the same version I had before. Sigh.
So I tried fiddling with it again, and got the same results. However,
this time it gave me a neat screen with a blue background and white
writing on it…
I basically did:
- install new driver with adapter unplugged, reboot
- plug in adapter, let windows find driver for adapter
- start windbg
- connect to my target, watch it freeze and do nothing when I hit ctrl-break
- belkin usb to serial adapter
- unplugged the belkin usb adapter (windbg is still open on the host
machine)
- close windbg
boom
---- snip ----
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
…
*** U2S2KXPB.SYS - Address …
---- snip ----
And wouldn’t you know it, that just happens to be the driver that was
installed when I plugged in the adapter. So I guess for now I’d warn
anyone against using the F5U109 adapter and instead go with the F5U103
that Gary got to work…
:<br>
Someday when I have nothing better to do with 8 or 10 hours of my life
I’ll return to try and get this working again…
sean

Too many acronyms
Nah that doesn’t seem to affect it, I can get the system to crash with
and without the service running…
I just did a quick look at the crash dump… The U2S2KXPB.SYS driver
crashes in a read from non-paged pool, so I’m guessing it has something
to do with the fact that WinDBG has the driver open while I rip the
device out, which causes the driver to do some type of suprise removal
handling, but it doesn’t do it right… and then when WinDBG closes
(which most likely does a close on the com port it had open), the driver
tries to clean up what has already been removed and trips over itself…
but that’s just my guess…
*shrug* who knows… for now I’ll just demote the adapter to use in
hyperterm and never rip it out of the box while an app has it open

The first thing I do after buying a new computer is to wipe the hard
drive and start from scratch. You should see how many useless services
are installed on something like a Compaq, for example (I count around 9
compaq something-or-other). Not to mention the weird hidden partition
Dell puts on your hard drive (for god knows what purpose). Better to be
in control.
