here is quote from our’s sys admin letter
"We Wish You A Merry Virus
Though it has yet to reach the US with any force, the latest in the
computer worm saga is already munching its way through PCs across the
globe. Called the “Navidad” worm (“Christmas” in Spanish), this email-born
grinch has been given a “Medium Alert” status from Sunnyvale-based
anti-virus developer McAfee.com, which is working to prevent Christmas
from being spread.
Researchers from McAfee say they have been receiving reports of high
levels of infections of the Navidad worm in the United Kingdom, South
America and Latin America. Officially titled “W32/Navidad@m”, the worm is
distributed by a response email with a “NAVIDAD.EXE” attachment. According
to McAfee, once the attachment is executed an icon of a blue eye appears
in the system tray in the lower right corner of the screen.
When the cursor is placed over the eye, the text, “Lo estamos mirando…”
is displayed. (“We are watching it”). If clicked, the eye renders a button
reading “Nunca presionar este boton” (“Never press this button”). Finally,
and in an ironic twist of Christmas spirit, if a user disregards the
warning and presses the button the text: “Feliz Navidad. Lamentablemente
cayo en la tentacion y perdio su computadora” fills the screen (“Merry
Christmas, unfortunately you’ve given in to temptation and lose your
computer”).
Once in the user’s system, every email received will be “responded” to
automatically, continuing to propagate the worm on other computers. The
method is similar to that of the infamous ILOVEYOU worm, which found its
way into some of the highest echelons of government last year, affecting
computers on Capitol Hill and at the Central Intelligence Agency.
McAfee has posted an update on its site the company promises “will protect
users from Christmas.”
Now can they do anything about Thanksgiving?
