Urgent question about HCK installation!!!

Hi all,

Recently, I need to setup the HCK environment for xHCI usb3.0 host testing.

According to the “Windows Hardware Certification Step-by-Step Guide”

I have install the
Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation
Windows Licence valid for 180 days
Build 9200
on the host PC.

And take more than 5 hours(the network speed is very very boring) to download the “Windows Hardware Certification Kit”
It is about 3GB package.

According to “Windows Hardware Certification Step-by-Step Guide”
The server need to install “controller + studio”.

But when installation go to the step:
“Select the features you want to install”.

  1. “Windows hardware certification kit – studio only”
  2. “Windows hardware certification kit – controller + Studio”

Where the 2nd item is grey, does not allowed to select.

And following a tips:
The controller option may only be used on a system running the English language version of Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 which is not configured as a domain controller.

“Windows Hardware Certification Step-by-Step Guide” tell that 2012 is also allowed for HCK host PC.
So I think Win server 2012 is not the reason for installation “controller+ studio” grey issue.
So 2008 server is not mandatory.
Maybe the default 2012 is configured to as a domain controller, this is the reason.
So how to deconfigure the 2012 not a domain controller?
Does anybody come across this issue before?
Can any body help to resolve this issue?

thank you very much for help.
Pls help me, cause this HCK environemnt take me too much time(a week 5 work day)have past.

Hi:

First you need to decide if you want a Domain Controller or Workgroup test
enviroment. The Domain Controller requires at least three computers,
Section 6.1 in the setup guide.

You need to check if you configuredthe 2012 Server as a Domain Controller,
look at the My Computer properties, select theComputer Name Tab.

If your server is a Domain Controller, and you want the Workgroup test
enviroment I would just re-install the server. To help offset the HCK
download time check if you downloaded the complete HCK install package, if
so save somewhere you can access it again and not the Web install, if not go
start the complete package download on another computer now, while you do
the re-install.

The HCK release notes say that the HCK infrastructure (studio and
controller) must be installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, with SQL
Server R2 32-bit. It does NOT say Windows Server 2012. I’m wondering
if the Step-by-Step Guide might be referring to the beta version of the
HCK for Windows 8.1, not the released version.

thank you very much for help.

We could have told you that. Once you get through it once, it only
takes a few days to do another HCK test submission, but the initial
learning curve is very step. I allowed two weeks, and it took most of that.

Setup of the server, domain and so on can be hard for a beginner. IT
staff of your company should be familiar with this and able to help you.

Hi, Tim,

I hope 2012 server should be ok for HCK.
Otherwise, I have to ask IT staff to uninstall 2012 and install 2008 server.

Hi, Pavel A,

What I should do first, is ask for help from IT staff to configure the 2012, to make it could install controller + studio HCK.

Any other comments?

Hi, Phil,

Because limited PCs.

I have only two PCs for HCK.

And I think the “STET BY STEP” have told that it is allowed the WORKGROUP, namely one host one target for HCK testing.

I have download the package of HCK.

It is 3GB totally content.

No more time need to download again.

If it is, my boss will angry.

He give me three days for HCK setup, and also approve the MUTT devices purchasing.
But the IT group, delay my work for does not supply the Win2012 for about 1 week.

The give one 2012 could not install,
then one 2012 not english version
then 2012 english installation ok, but not ok for HCK controller + studio.

Anyway, I should setup these environment, which will be use very long time in our xHCI IP developing.

Hi Wesley:

Did you check how you existing 2012 Server is configured (Domain Controller or Workgroup)?

Phil

I just checked the configuration:

Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings:
Computer name: WIN-1Q5NIJVVMRF
Full computer name: WIN-1Q5NIJVVMRF
Computer description: (no description)
Workgroup: WORKGROUP

Oh, my god.
It seems that the 2012 server is workgroup, not domain controller.
So Tim is right? Win server 2012 could not install HCK “controller + studio”.
I have to install 2008 server R2 X64?

Uninstall 2012.

Install 2008, HCK “controller + studio” could be selected.

Error:
Failed to connect to database. Failed to connect to OM.

Oh my god.
One issue fixed by replace 2012 to 2008, another issue appear.

When I start the hck studio.

I find the FAQ, and find the following tips, but I can’t found the “Users nodes”

I have finished the HCK software installation on test server, which is 2008 server.
And also install the client on the Win8 system, by “Guide” step 2.

But when go to step 3, when I start the HCK studio,
Failed to connect to database. Failed to connect to OM. error appears.

Does not know what to do to fix this issue.

What should I added?
The target test machine PC name and pw? or other things to HCK controller?

I feel MS documents is always ambiguous, and waste lots of time and misleading others.

============================================
Configure additional user accounts
By default, the user account used to install the Controller is the only account that can run tests using HCK Studio. If you want to allow additional accounts to manage tests via remote HCK Studio, you must manually add each account to your Controller.
On your Controller, add each account to the Administrator group.

Open HCK Manager, click Tools > Management Console, and then expand the Users node.

Right-click hck_dsowners, select New User.

Enter the account (DOMAIN\accountname) or MACHINE\account).

Click OK.

I have no idea about the issue:
Error:
Failed to connect to database. Failed to connect to OM.

So I reinstall the Win2008 server and HCK, and client.

Now it works, that means I can test my company xHCI host controller on the target PC with Win8 native xHCI usb3.0 stack.

Updates:

Maybe the

Error: Failed to connect to database. Failed to connect to OM.

is caused by I change the PC name after HCK installation finished.

Because in choose connection page:
Controller name is fix to the Win2008 PC name, not the changed PC name.
