UMD driver

hii… I am new in this driver develoment feild … I have to writ ea user mode driver of a visual display adapter in vista … can anybody have any idea regarding where to start and any link which can give basic insight of umd in vista … thanx

I am also just a beginner in Windows driver development. You can do the following till some expert answers our queries.

I see no direct visual adapter sample under src folder. We may start with sample skeleton example under winddk-src-umdf-skeleton.

Later we can analyze visual display example and include the code accordingly.

Regards.

Thanks Uday for ur reply

For what company? The barriers to entry for graphics chips today is so
high that I cannot imagine someone new trying to enter this market.

The src\video\R200Sample in the DDK is an example of a WDDM driver. I’m
not sure it’s a particularly good example, but that’s what you get.
Seriously, if you intend to bring a new graphics chip to market, you
need to contact Microsoft NOW to start forging a relationship and gain
access to the people you need to know.

No, you can’t. WDDM drivers, even though part runs in user mode, are
not UMDF. WDDM is its own world, separate from all the rest.

I have seen this but as a beginner i find some what difficult to comprehend, but still i will try to follow it. What i am asking is there some way by which I can start step by step. Thanks

I have searched it on Net, but not able to point out any site where I can get the assistance even paid one from microsoft regardig this. Do u have any link or contact by which we can get help from microsoft. Thanks

Many major companies have developers on site at Microsoft’s Redmond
headquarters. Your company must have a contact with the group at Microsoft
that handles graphics chip interface into the display part of Windows. I
know nothing about display drivers, but I have seen people from companies
that build printers and I have heard that other hardware companies are
present in the other buildings. If you don’t have any contacts, start with
the contact page at microsoft.com. Keep asking the operator until you find
the correct group. I can’t believe that you work for a company that can
create a graphics chip and not have any contacts at Microsoft, but I guess
it is possible.

Yes, getting started is usually the hardest part of establishing a
relationship like this. Microsoft generally has an evangelist for most
device classes, whose job it is to vet requests like this and funnel the
information to the right spots. I have lost touch with the display
group and no longer know who this would be. With any luck, a member of
our Helpful Microsoft Army will be able to contact you with a suggestion.

Have you looked through this information ==>

If I may be so bold, a WDDM driver is no place for a beginner. Display
drivers have always been a difficult place to start, and the new WDDM
stuff make it even more so. You have a long learning curve ahead of you.
