Thermal event shutdown using debugger

Hi all,

I’m running a driver on a dual processor dell server, and when I break into
the debugger for around 20 mins or so (using WinDBG), the server turns
itself off due to a “thermal event”. Has this happened to anyone, and is
there anything I can do to stop it (maybe upgrade case fans)?

Thanks,
Matt

Exactly so, I also observed this on some old machines.

I would guess that the kernel is spinning on the serial port while its in the debugger, causing the CPU to heat up. Normally this would be okay, unless you have a cooling problem. So, yes, you probably need a new fan  To confirm, just point a desk fan at the heatsink and see if that fixes the problem.
