The L* bug/problem/robot/whatever...

OK, it seems I’ve pulled the monster out of the cage.
Let me get this straight:

  1. I’m using a Win2K-based system and Outlook Express
    (c’mon… I’m not an e-mail expert, it’s easy to use and I hadn’t
time yet to install Eudora… but I’m seriously considering it!..)

  2. My messages are sent as PLAIN TEXT - and *not* Rich
Text (HTML) Format. Could this be nasty to the L*ris server?..

Having said that, allow me (please) to participate on the
discussion…

Nanner nanner nanner … it didn’t …

Sorry to disagree, but I bet HE (the sender) DID get the
“message rejected” reply.

This may also apply to WinDbg. Lyris may be rejecting
messages because some of us are not using Rich Text
Format, including VCards, and or attachments (funny fonts).

Now I agree with you (see above). Strange though, I’m
receiving receiving YOUR messages in Rich Text (HTML)
Format…

I don’t get it, guys. Somebody wanna explain what they’re
seeing? I don’t have a clue…

Stephen Williams explained it quite well,

It’s simple. When messages come from the mailing list (…)

I’ve been accused of being a robot.
Imagine a robot calling *me* a robot! (snip)

Strange world, these days… :)))

Fresh messages (not replies) have no trace of the original,
so are not necessarily filtered out.

Yet, my “fresh” messages are getting to the list, *but* I’m
still getting the infame “message rejected” reply…

The problem is, of course, even with this robot demon,
I still get vacation responses from all over whenever
I post to this list.

That might happen because in addition of the “To” and “Cc”
fields, you also set the list to be your “Reply To” address…

The folks at OSR who post via email are not getting any of

Maybe the folks at OSR don’t use M$-based e-mail…

If you’ve been getting the mystery “message rejected” messages (…)
this is a “known problem”, and it’s not a bug in Lyris. It’s also
not NECESSARILY a “user error” problem.

Of course, if you bounce an email back to the list (instead of the
“reply to” address, like you’re supposed to) then you will (…) get
this
rejection.

Well, Peter, sorry to disagree  but I usually do one of the following:

  1. REPLY TO SENDER (which is the LIST, so it should get to
all of you out there) or
  2. MAIL DIRECTLY the sender (to his/her unique e-mail address);
this is not that often (people have jobs and not the whole time in the
world to spend reading e-mails), but occasionally that may be
    necessary.

Also, consider what I said at the beginning of this e-mail. Now, what
could be the problem?.. Me?.. I strongly suspect of the L*ris
deamon…

It works because your server (veridicom.cz.nospam) supports that
facility. Good for you.

Take any further rambling discussion of this topic off line, to email with
me, please. There’s no need to bore folks in the forum with the various
theories about what’s going on, what mail reader you use, what email system
you think OSR is running, or whether Lyris is or is not at fault.

As I reported yesterday, this problem is known by the Lyris folks, and they
know what the problem is.

The following is not entirely provable, but it’s certainly plausible.

  1. Someone turned their *not*-helpful “Out-Of-Office” assistant on.
  2. Said bot dutifully replies as it was instructed, however, it mixes the
addresses, so the Reply-To: address is set to the OP, and the To: is set to
    the list.
  3. The list-server sees the bogus message, bounces it to the Reply-To:
address, which is the OP, and the OP gets a rejection notice.

In the rejection message I got, it appeared that might
have generated the auto-reply, but it’s not obvious that this is correct.
It could really be a server out-gassing incident, and
is unjustly implicated.

Just some speculation, if anyone wants to prove or disprove, I’m eager to
read about it.
