Symbols for W2K3 SP1?

I have just upgraded to SP1 and I’m having problems getting (some) symbols.

I have downloaded the checked and free symbols and I have configured my
symbol path to point at these and the symbol server, but consider:

kd> .reload fltmgr.sys
DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\symbols\sys\fltMgr.pdb - mismatched pdb
DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\2003\free\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\2003\free\symbols\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\2003\free\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: c:\windows\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: c:\windows\symbols\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: c:\windows\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found

DBGHELP: C:\CVSROOT\Drivers\symbols\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\CVSROOT\Drivers\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found
SYMSRV: The server name or address could not be resolved
SYMSRV:

SYMSRV:
http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/fltMgr.pdb/CAD9573F320949DFB5054EE848988B251/fltMgr.pdb

DBGHELP: fltMgr.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: Couldn’t load mismatched pdb for fltmgr.sys
*** ERROR: Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for
fltmgr.sys -
DBGHELP: fltmgr - export symbols

However:

kd> .reload flpydisk.sys
DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\flpydisk.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\symbols\sys\flpydisk.pdb - mismatched pdb
DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\sys\flpydisk.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: C:\2003\free\flpydisk.pdb - file not found
DBGHELP: flpydisk - public symbols
C:\2003\free\symbols\sys\flpydisk.pdb

The directory on the symbol server is there (I get a 403 - access forbidden
from IE), but I get a 404 for fltmgr.pdb. It looks as though fltmgr.sys is
there (different error).

What am I doing wrong?

I had similar issues with the pae kernel on sp1 at first …

First thing - you can use !sym noisy to see where symbols are being sought.
Second thing - say you installed you sybmols at C:\W2K3SP1SYMBOLS so you
also have a dir C:\W2K3SP1SYMBOLS\Symbols, then you can try pointing your
symbols path at C:\W2K3SP1SYMBOLS.

Your mileage can vary

Oh, I should open my eyes, you must have !sym noisy there

So I assume you are running free build W2K3 SP1 hence …

DBGHELP: C:\2003\checked\symbols\sys\fltMgr.pdb - mismatched pdb

… so then why …

DBGHELP: C:\2003\free\symbols\sys\fltMgr.pdb - file not found

… because for sure I dint I have …
C:\symbols\W2K3SP1\symbols\sys\fltmgr.pdb

… ?

Funnily enough the symbols seem to be OK for the checked build.

For the sake of the archive, I have removed the SP in the interim, I’ll try
again when I’mless pushed for time.

Well I have half resolved this. Windbg doesn’t seemto want to resolve
http://msdl.microsoft.com/

I replaced that with http://207.46.248.241/

and it seemed to work. Not a pleasant fix but it will keep me going…

Uhhh … MSDL? I know of MSDN.MICROSOFT.COM, but never heard of
MSDL.MICROSOFT.COM. Did you spell it correctly? Silly thing about computers
I learned many decades ago … you do not have to know how to spell, but you
must be consistent.

Msdl is correct; it’s the microsoft symbol download server (farm). See
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/debugstart.mspx for
more details.

Try “.symfix” or “!symfix” and it will set it FOR you automatically.
The WinDBG team has done just about everything they can to cover this
case (the documentation lists it, the web site lists it and they give
you a command to set it!)
