We have a customer that is complaining that their 16 bit apps stopped working when they installed SP1 of W2K3 Server 32 bit Enterprise Edition. After a bit of testing here, we find that a number of 16 bit apps fail with “NTVDM encountered a hard error” on this configuration. The apps run on RTM or on 64 bit edition of W2K3 SP1 Server.
We can’t find anything in KB about this. Has anyone else encountered this? Is this by design?
I need something to defuse the customer, since they are about to raise a fairly high priority scream complaining that this failure is due to our HAL. (Not that the HAL has anything to do with this, other than it is a different version than on RTM, so is obviously the problem - after all, nothing in the OS changed between RTM and SP1, did it?)

Hi,
Generally there are some issues with 16 bits apps
related to some security hotfix installed on Windows
XP SP2, and of course W2K3.
