Revisited: How to fetch checked components for Vista/W2k8

I have found that 7-Zip will open wim files directly (li.e. install.wim).
This allows you to extract any (driver) file you want. You may have to poke
around a bit in the archive to find it but the paths are obvious. 7-Zip is
available for free at www.7-zip.org. (I have no affiliation with 7-zip,
just a satisfied customer).

Nice things about this are:
You don’t have to download or install WAIK
you don’t have to install any FS filters from imagex (although that sounds
cool, I’ve never used it).

I hope this helps!

Thanks Jon. I had been hunting for something like this a while back but no go and gave up…

One other nice thing about 7-zip is that it will open and browse ISO
images, so you don’t need a separate ISO browser.

And they seem to have a unix port which is quite handy for me.

This is most excellent, all around, though imagex is nice, if you
already have it, when it doesn’t crash the machine.

I think that the technology is getting renamed/alternate tool again shortly.
