Removable Drive Icon in 'My Computer'

Hi all,

Manier times I use USB drives to transfer data. I always get a question while doing this. Which part / program within MS Windows brings up icon on “My Computer” whenever any USB mass storage device is connected? I have basic knowldge of WDM but I really failed to search answer of this question. I tried to use filemon, processmon to find the processing of this action.

How exactly this icon comes in “My Computer” whenever we connect the device?

I am sorry if the question sounds stupid, but please let me know if anyone knows how it works.

Thanks,

Yogi

It is MountMgr.sys who catches the partition arrival notification and
creates the drive letter for it.

Then shell32.dll refreshes the My Computer view if any, I don’t know the
details about this mechanism.
