I am having a tough time finding a *reliable* USB/Serial adapter to use
with my IBM T42 laptop, I have a belkin that used to work ok, but
recently has started hanging and forcing a reboot to recover, I think
there may be a bad wire in the cable. Other replacement models I have
tried wont even connect to the target…
Can anyone recommend a USB->Serial adapter that works well? In
particular a twin serial port model would be nice as I sometimes need to
run both a firmware debugger and KD simultaneously…

I tried a bunch of USB-to-serial adapters that did not work on
the WinDbg debug host side (even though they worked with terminal
programs). [Of course we don’t expect any to work on the target side].
I stopped looking when I found this one that does work for me:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812147302
It is however annoying to use, because each time I reinsert it, its
COM port number changes. And it’s not the twin port product you’re
hoping for, Zach.
Next time I will shop for a host computer with a built-in serial port
(even though most of my debugging is now via FireWire).
Best regards,
David

So USB-serial is not meant to work for target side debugging? Not that I ve
ever got it to work either but just curious why.

Because it, the target OS, uses the serial bus and not the USB bus. Your
USB/serial “port” cannot be enumerated until way long after the system has
decided there is no serial port available for debug. I’ve heard rumors
that Vista will use the USB bus for debugging like 1394 and serial, but
that will also require special cabling to resolve the host-to-host
problem.

I have had great success with the Keyspan 4-port USB/serial adapter.
http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA49w/
I have two of these in daily use (debugging test servers). They allow me
to have a single debug host for 8 targets, which is a nice cost saving.
Never had a hiccup I could attribute to them, and I really like their
diagnostic tools (like a line monitor).
