Re: Writing a USB function controller that can work with Windows out-of-the-box

Does Windows 2000 and/or XP support a standard USB Serial Host Driver?
My company is developing an embedded software for a mobile device. I
would like it to connect with Windows and open a virtual com port,
without having the user to install a new driver. Is there such an
option?

There’s USBSER, but it really only provides modem-like functionality. I
rate a full-blown serial port driver for a USB device as difficulty 5
(on a scale 1-5). Only very experienced driver programmers can do a
complete job on this kind of project (and inexperienced programmers
often don’t recognize the limits of their knowledge).
