RE: Re[2]: NTFS disk crash

fixing a win2k boot sector does not need to be that complicated. a simpler
approach is as follows:

  1. boot the recover console
  2. execute the fixboot command
  3. exit the console

to boot the recovery console you have 3 choices:

  1. boot the win2k cd, at the welcome screen press SHIFT-F10

or

  1. boot the win2k cd, at the welcome screen choose r for revocery, and then
    c for console

or

  1. install the recovery console onto your harddisk and then simply reboot
the machine and choose the recovery console from the boot menu. to install
the console simply run “winnt32 /cmdcons”.

maybe your ntfs boot sector is wrong. (Booting/installing win9x
sometimes gives strange results.)

To fix a ntfs boot-sector:

  1. Use the other NT-System
  2. Use DskProbe.exe from NT4-Resource Kit or from Win2000 Support
    Directory.
  3. open physical drive ( the faulty one) read sector 0 and display as
    Partition-Table. Verify entrys.
  4. If these entrys make sense go to first sector of your ntfs partition.
Display as NTFS Boot-Sector. If it is overwritten you can go to the
last sector of the ntfs partition where you find a copy of boot
sector. Copy it to sector 0 of your partition.
  5. reboot.
  6. check again in diskmgr.

I have try another NT system, the case is the same. The message Box show "
The file or directory$Volume is corrupt and unreadable, please run the
chkdsk utility" I have run chkdsk, but it seems no use. I use NT disk
administrator to view the disk, It shows “unknown” on my NTFS disk.

Take a look at EasyRecovery: http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecovery/

You can download a trial version of the Personal or the Professional edition.

Hi,

My NT system can not access the NTFS disk drive. But this disk drive has
my source code and data. How do I rescue my code and data? Does any tool do
this job like Norton utility to rescue Dos FAT data?

Thanks

James

I should have mentioned that you will need the professional version to recover files from NTFS.

Howdy Rick,

Last week my target with 3 versions of Windows threw a fit. After installing
XP 2428 and doing some testing to see if the 2000 driver suite that I am
working on would install, load and run under XP, the system crashed and
could not recognize the 2000 and XP partition as containing an OS. In fact,
the partition itself was considered corrupted or non-existent after booting
to NT4. I tried recovery but nada worked.

Would EasyRecovery aided in that situation?
Could it recover the boot partition?

Hi Gary!

It wouldn’t actually recover the partition.

What it would do is re-construct the partition in memory (sans any corruption!) and allow you to recover any files that it discovered by allowing you to copy them to another disk.

EasyRecover is strictly a file recovery utility.
