If this so, why does the PFN entry need a back pointer to the referencing
PTE?

For a shared page, it points to the referencing prototype PTE.
The purpose is to invalidate the PTE or PPTE completely (from Transition to Non-Present) when the page is re-allocated for some
other needs.
