Although I am the one who tried to stop this thread (thanks Bob), I too will
continue to contribute.
I grew up in the deep south in a very small tobacco producing town. Every
guy I knew carried a gun to school at least once. Many had them every day on
the rack in their pickup trucks. I, myself, remember on day, in my locker, I
had the following (I was 15 or so):
- 8mm German Mouser (WW-I relic that I had re-blued and fixed up)
- 25 cal. Titan semi-automatic pistol (tiny little thing)
- 12" cannon my best friend made in machine shop class (that is another
story
You see, our intent was not to bring weapons to school. Our intent was to
bring guns to school. Why? So that after school we could head out to the
fields a do some shooting. That is the way it was in the south where I grew
up. No one ever, in the history of my school, was ever threatened or shot
with a gun. I remember my friend and I walking through the woods coming home
from school each day, stopping at our favorite spots and cracking a few
rounds. I had gun safety training when I was 7. I was a scout since Cub. My
how the world has changed…

Well, this thread is the first thing to literally make me laugh so hard I
fell out of my chair, in a long long time. It is also good to know I am
not the only one who was semi-demented as a youngster. I cut
open about 10
20 gauge shells and dumped the powder into one of my mom’s leggs
eggs when
I was about 10. Burned all the hair off the front of my head: eyebrows,
eyelashes, bangs, the works. Heck of a light show for about 10 seconds
though. The plastic egg was vaporized. At least in the non-politically correct environment we grew up
in, the only
thing we really had to worry about was killing ourselves. Nobody so much
as brought a knife to my highschool, well not for use as a weapon
anyway.
Maybe morbid curiosity, bugs bunny, and kids fighting weren’t all
that bad
in retrospect. Well, then again, all of us here ended up working
on kernel
