I posted this on the beta groups, but got no takers …

Has anyone attempted to install a 2000 driver on Whistler that requires
replacing a delivered driver with a driver under development? The delivered
driver has of course been blessed by Microsoft where as the developing driver
has not. When I attempted this I got a bitch box stating “The specified location
does not contain information about your hardware.” The drivers and INF files
work fine under 2000.

Gary

Quick thought Does the driver need to be signed / have a signature attached
to ?
If so and your win 2k one contains a signature may be the code for
attaching the signature has changed

MS would better invent a way of blocking the CreateRemoteThread call - which
(and the DLL injection associated with it) is a huge hole viruses can use.

Gary,

Send me the details privately. This sounds more an *.inf
incompatibility issue than a driver signing issue.

Ok … read it.

So how do I load an “unblessed” driver that is in development, and may never
be blessed, since our customers generally don’t give a shit about
Microsoft’s blessings?

They write their own apps for our hardware and drivers. We’re not talking
about millions of PC’s on home desktops.

You can get a key to sign a driver for test development from MS. (It cannot be
released with this test key though)
I can’t recall the URL off-hand though.

If you take the stand that a signed app can be trusted, this is not a
problem, as the system would not run the code that contained the malicious
CreateRemoteThread call. I’d think people would want to be selective about
which signatures they trust.

An app signed by a large ISV will probably not have a virus built in,
although may still have bugs. The slippery slope is ISV’s may start being
legally liable for their bugs, which I personally think is a good thing. I
can’t think of many industries where the manufacture get’s away with saying
their product may be defective and fail, and purchasers agree to this. This
is exactly what most software licenses say. Of course I would also expect
this liability to extend to the OS, which I think is a VERY good thing. My
guess is if companies could be sued if they ship buggy products software
quality might go up a bunch (price also may go up a bunch too). I’d just
love to see software companies be RESPONSIBLE for the products they ship.

This also goes down the slippery slope of requiring software engineers to
be licensed, just like currently is required for say structural engineers.

Generally, I’m in favor of improving software quality, as at the moment the
bad quality is a really serious crisis. Most software doesn’t have
someone’s physical safety at stake, but very commonly does have financial
impact if it fails or produces incorrect results.

Paul,

At this time Microsoft does not have a program where driver developers
can get a signature for testing. In the past Microsoft has experimented
with a test signature program with a handful of vendors and we are
evaluating expanding access to a test signature program for the next
release Windows codenamed Whistler, but at this time Microsoft is
generally not able to provide test signatures.

Even in the current legal situation, if the company wants to provide the
real quality guarantee (and earn additional money on it by raising the
price) - they can use this approach and write the appropriate EULA.
I don’t think that there is no such companies. The situation you do not like
seems to be mainly on the mass-production consumer software market
(especially desktop one).

Generally, I’m in favor of improving software quality, as at the moment
the bad quality is a really serious crisis.

There is lots of talks on it, but… looks like there is no real market
force to improve the consumer software quality. People still do buy what the
companies provide and are comforted with “no warranty” EULAs.

Most software doesn’t have
someone’s physical safety at stake, but very commonly does have financial
impact if it fails or produces incorrect results.

Things like MSSQLServer or Oracle seem to be rather well-debugged and
trustworthy.
And AV fault in, say, ICQ at one’s desktop will not have any financial
impact.

Hi Gary,

If a digital signature should be necessary you, your device must pass the
test of WHQL.
Check this URL.
http://www.microsoft.com/hwtest/signatures/

By the way, are you trying to install the device driver of what device?
There was no problem though I installed USBModem in Whistler with inf of
Windows2000.
I think that there is a device category that the installation of the driver
is blocked after WindowsME.
If it never has an influence, I think that you should do confirmation.
Or, it has the possibility that your inf isn’t based on the inf reference
of windows2000DDK.

refer to this URLs.
