RE: Can Windows 2000 and Windows XP co-exist on the s ame machine

Except for growing NT 4 parturitions and relocating them, what again
does it do that you can not do using the native OS tools?

I want to add a plug for a product called Partition Magic. It allows
you to partition a single disk into 4 major partitions of which 3 can be
system/boot partitions. The remaining 1, 2 or 3 partitions would be
logical/data partitions which can be sub-partitioned into D:, E:, F:,…
drives. Each of these subpartitions can be formatted differently
(FAT16, FAT32, NTFS). This allows a system partition for NT4, W2K and
XP as well as some shared data space. This completely hides the
different OS’s from each other and there is no chance of an install of
one messing with the other(s).

In addition this product allows easy reallocation of partition sizes
after the OS’s are installed so if your 3 meg NT4 partition needs to
grow, you just move a slider bar and let it do its thing.

I’m not in anyway associated with Partition Magic. Just a very
impressed customer. I know there are competitors which I cannot speak
to. It has made my job much easier.

Sure, but you can buy a 100GB disk off the shelf retail for
not a whole lot
of cash, so why bother with this crap? Just make the first
partition a 4GB
partition for the hideous NT4 and a couple of 20GBs for w2k
and xp, and have
about 50GB left over for whatever your heart desires.

there are boot managers allowing to install several versions
of Windows in a
single partition. the Program Files folder is managed
independantly for each
Windows. look for example at www.acronis.com.

Actually I think that in general you want to install in order
of release
(nt4->W2K->XP) and you really, really want to have a
different partition for
each OS. Be very careful with large disks and NT4 as it has
‘issues’. I
recently did this to a test system, in order to have
nt4/w2k/xp available
and went through absolute hell on the nt4 install. W2k and XP
were strictly
no problem.

Sure.
I have NT4, 2000 and XP all on the same box, but each in it’s
own partition.
I would install 2000 before installing XP. -bill

Hello Jamey,
I have used partition magic many times. I can convert from FAT12, FAT16, &
FAT32 to NTFS and back - which M$ does not permit. M$ wants NTFS to be a
dead end and not the part of a journey. You can resize partitions easily.
You can move partitions around on the hard disk. It is also very useful in
upgrading a running system from one hard drive to another. I put them both
in and can copy the partitions over. I can also specify the new sizes
during that conversion. I used it when going from a 30GB to 45GB. I like
four FAT32 partitions covering the entire drive and this works well. It is
not something you need every day unless you rebuild hard drives several
times a day.

I also use GHOST PE to save a copy of my drives and can restore from it even
if the new drive is of a different size, as long as the data fits. I have a
old version of Drive Image and never found a use for it. It can’t compete
with Ghost.

For me, PartitionMagic failed miserably. It spits some nasty errors and fails.
So, I used the Linux “dd” tool which worked fine.

Linux “dd” is exactly for this.
Though the CHS stuff in the partition table must be written by hand - Linux’s tools are unable to produce the layout compatible with
the CHS values in drive’s identify data as seen by BIOS.

Yes but for a one time installation it really isn’t worth the effort.
See the unattended installation support documentation.

Is it possible to have NT4 CD with NT and latest SP(4 or …)
combined? I have NT4 and latest sp. How to combine these two.
This is to avoid installation of sp after NT installation.

Well, this recommendation is correct but it is quite possible
to have NT4, w2k and XP on one partition without any 3rd
party utility (or am I seeing ghosts on my drives? :). I
believe it is also possible to install NT4 after w2k and
maybe XP, there are updated winnt32.exe on SP4+ CDs for this purpose.

Anyway, it is better to follow Mark’s recommendation (and
maybe update NT4 to the latest SP before w2k install).
