Question on XP64

Hi, guys,

I bought myself a cool 64-bit Athlon machine running XP Media Center, and I installed XP64 on it. Since then, I’ve been hit over and again by the sad fact that some of my favorite peripherals don’t work in the 64-bit OS because they don’t have drivers for it. For example, my Linksys USB Wireless Network Adapter. Also, I bought a 2-license copy of McAfee VirusScan, to install on my two systems, just to find out that it does not work on 64-bit OS’s.

My questions: when are you guys write some 64-bit drivers for a change ? Inquiring minds want to know. Also, anyone know a Virus Scanner that works on 64-bit XP ?

Thanks…

Alberto.

Actually, there’s a straight-forward fix for this if you use VMWare - it
supports USB devices attached to the host AND supports 64-bit drivers.

In trouble-shooting my own 64-bit box (it was taking periodic machine
checks, suggesting a memory error) I had to flash the bios; the bios
flashing utility for this MB required that I boot to DOS first; I
couldn’t find my DOS boot floppy (how many YEARS has it been since I
used one?) so I wanted to burn one.

The MS-DOS 6.22 distribution from MSDN unpacks just fine on 64-bit but
the 16-bit floppy imaging program doesn’t. I’d already installed VMWare
on the 64-bit system so I started up a virtual machine, ran the 16-bit
installer inside the 32-bit VM running on my 64-bit host. Worked like a
champ.

In fact, my goal with this next box is to start living in a far more
virtualized world - I’m going to keep test VMs around just so I can
install those annoying Active X components, little downloadable software
gadgets, CD/DVD burning applications, etc., all in their own pristine
virtualized environment - and I can discard that environment when or if
it stops working properly. That should lessen their ability to trash my
base installation environment. I’m even installing MS Office into its
own VM (storage is on the host, shared with the VM).

Bottom line: don’t forget that you can virtualize 32-bit machines on
your x64 box; this won’t address issues about the basic services on the
host (Ethernet, graphics, storage controller) but assuming you choose
right, you’ll be able to work around a lot of annoying issues (missing
USB and printer drivers, for example - try finding a USB scanner to work
with 64-bit out-of-the-box. The one HP unit I found (at the time -
they’ve added more since I first checked) on the WHQL site worked fine,
although HP pre-sales told me it didn’t support 64-bit. Lucky for me
I’m impatient and had already downloaded the software, and when I found
the decorated “.ntamd64” section figured they DID support 64-bit!)

One true joy of 64-bit for me was seeing the report that 1.2GB of memory
was in use by the file system data cache. I guess that means those VMs
will run better with more data cached in memory!

Tony

MessageThanks, Robin! I just got a terse answer from McAfee saying that they don’t support 64-bit OS’s. As a side remark, be careful not to mispell McAfee: I went into http://www.mcaffee.com and my screen filled up with advertising popups.
