OT: wME, SoftICE and 512 MB RAM

Has anybody an experience with such configuration? Important is more than
256 MB of RAM. I have to add something to an old VXD so added old disk with
wME to my computer, tried old DS 2.0 installation, uninstalled, installed DS
2.7 and tried to make it working. Never had too much problems with SoftICE
and w9x before but also never used it on machine with so much RAM. And it
seems as a root of problems now.

If I set PHYSMB=512 i.e. real amount of memory as recommended in winice.dat,
BSOD appears very soon after boot and vcache.vxd complains there is no
memory for cache and stops system. With 256 exploder crashes immediately
after logon and never starts again. With 128 initialization after logon
takes ages (well minutes) but finally completes. Anyway, I don’t trust it
because not everything seems to work as expected and networking seems
confused. With 32 it seems to work but I still don’t trust it. That’s why
I’m asking for experiences.

Yes, I’ll ask tech support as always recommend. However, I expect an answer
in this case…

I would suggest using DS 2.1 or older for Windows NT, 98 and ME. I did
not see the problems you mentioned, of course I never have more than
64MB RAM of a NT/98/ME machine. I see problems loading symbols at boot
time. Softice reports some error, but they load fine if I manually load
from symbol loader after the system has booted. This problem is only
with recent versions of DS, 2.1 works fine for me.

Thanks, but I already tried it with the same results. I had there DS 2.01
and unistalled it because of this problem and hoped 2.7 would fix it. It
didn’t. Symbols are loaded correctly at boot time.

Previously, I used all w9x versions available and SI always worked. I’m
quite sure memory is the problem but I can remove it because have one 512 MB
module…

Michal,

I had the same problem w/ my WinMe when I upgraded from 256 Mb to 512 Mb.
The work-around that I used successfuly was to set the max physical memory that
Windows can use to a smaller value than 512 Mb. On WinMe you have to use the
MSCONFIG utility to set the limit. Launch the MSCONFIG (i.e. using Start/Run/
MSConfig), on the General TAB (the first one) click on “Advanced…” then check
the Limit memory and enter a smaller value than 512. I used different values and I
can’t remember which was the upper limit - the value I currently use is 320 Mb.
The MSConfig will set the MaxPhysPage value in the section [386Enh] of the
System.ini config file (i.e. for a MaxMem value of 320Mb the MaxPhysPage is set
to 13FFF (hexadecimal)). On the SoftIce config side I removed (commented out)
the PHYSMB=254 line from the Winice.dat config file. I have been running in this
configuration for the last year w/o any problems.
By doing this tweeks I’m “loosing” some memory but at least I can use the debugger
and I don’t need to physicaly remove the memory from the PC; and I can use all of
the memory when I boot Win2k (it is a multi-boot/multi-os development/debugging
PC).

I hope this helps,
Dan.

Hi, Michal ! Our QA people are taking a look, and one of our support guys
will be in contact with you. I don’t know if we ever tried running WinME
with that much memory. I’ll let you know.

Dan,

thank you, this is exactly what I wanted. Tried 256 MB and it seems to work.
I knew there is the way how to limit memory and even used it in the past for
something else but memory leaks quickly and I never expected to use w9x
again…

Dear all have the same problem not only under WinME but also under Win98SE.
I have 768MB DDR memory (Only under 256MB works fine). Set Physical-MB to
128 will bring my PC ATI-Rage-7000 to 16-color only! Does any of you know if
there is a new patch to fix it? As I need these memory for Lotus Notes R5
(To build a knowledge base, while debuging at the same time)

I also noticed similar problem and had 16 colors only in some
configurations. I guess it means something is corrupted. Try to set
PHYSMB=32 in SI and experiment with physical memory amount for w9x. For me,
256 MB works.

AFAIK, there is no patch. I had an e-mail conversation with tech support
about it and IIRC, the problem is too much PTEs consumed and no other way to
solve then limit use.

If your app need so much memory, use real OS. w9x is a toy unusable for
serious work.
