OT Quick guide to writing vxd's

Hi all,
Please could any one recommend a book that would give me in a week or less
the basic steps to creating a vxd device driver for win 98 or win 95
I have knowledge of writing windows nt4 filter drivers.
thanks

You can try David Thielen and Bryan Woodruff, “Writing Windows Virtual
Device Drivers”, Addison-Wesley, ISBN 0-201-62706-X. I saw it for $21.25 at
bookpool.com and a couple of used ones at half.com. and at alibris.com. Hope
this helps,

Alberto.

Here are two:

Try to find these:

1) Writing Windows VxDs and Device Drivers, Karen Hazzah, 1997 (2nd ed).
2) (out of print but indispensible- try to get it second hand) Systems
Programming for Windows 95, Walter Oney, 1996.

Going by memory: reference 1) is a good basic primer, but reference 2) is
needed for its depth. Be sure to check the errata for reference 2 on the
author’s website.

I don’t think that there is such a book, at least not in print. What
task are you trying to accomplish?

Hi all,
What I am trying to achieve is to obtain a basic / enough info to be able to
show some understanding of how vxd’s work / are produced.

I need this info for an interview I will be taking next week.

Hi Robert,

Best thing I can think of is to get the Win9x DDK and write a simple VXD.
Shouldn`t take you long to grasp the concepts involved.

Thats how i learnt to do it anyway

Hi all,
Please can anybody tell me what are the major differences are between
Writing Windows VxDs and Device Drivers, Karen Hazzah, 1997 (2nd ed).

and the 1995 version.

I am interested in this info as I have managed to track down a 1995 version
in the British library in London.

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.521 / Virus Database: 319 - Release Date: 23/09/2003

There is some information about plug and play in the second edition and
some updates for Win95. The first edition covers more of 3.1, but the VxD’s
are not that different. There are more API’s, of course, in Windows 95. If
you need to write or debug a VxD, the first edition can help you.

Hi all,
Please can anybody tell me what are the major differences are between

and the 1995 version.

I am interested in this info as I have managed to track down a 1995 version
in the British library in London.

I only have the 2ed, and it does not give a detailed comparison wrt to the
1st ed. The author mentions :“This second edition expands the coverage of
VxDs, with particular attention to the issues raised by new Windows 95
features, like Plug and Play”. Also, FWIW, the phrase “Expanded coverage of
Windows 95” is written prominently on the front page. The author did
mention that there is “far less” assembly in the 2ed compared to the 1st ed.
Actually, I have not looked at either book for well over a year now. This
book is great for a fast primer, but for actual development the other
reference (Oney) was indispensable.

A summary pulled from Amazon may be helpful:

FWIW Amazon has 8 copies of Oney’s VxD book (some used, some new):

I suggest that you use VtoolsD from Compuware.NuMega. It has more complete
‘C’ VxD wrappters, decent documentation and decent sample VxDs.
