Supported on XP.

Nope. It seems as new urban legend arose… (before replying please read
relevant part of windbg docs thoroughly)

Try testing
roaming from subnet to subnet with two devices connected by a
cable.

Two (or more) subnets in your office. If necessary, multiple little gray
boxes at the end of the wires, but I can’t imagine a setup where you have to
have two outlet boxes to have two separate subnets.

Alberto, can you explain secondary VGA support a bit? I like
mono monitor
but it seems I’ll be forced to change soon because no new
dual motherboard
have ISA slot for mono adapter :frowning:

Yes, I use this feature and like it very much.

I never tried to use two VGA cards at once and know nothing
about it. I’m
asking here because think it may be interesting for more SI
users. I’d like
to know:

  • if SI is displayed all the time as on mono screen

yes

  • if secondary monitor is in the VGA mode or uses UVD (Direct Draw)

it’s in vga mode

  • if SI controls fully secondary adapter as in the mono case

yes

and if there
are some hw dependencies

  • OS dependency (w2k+ and w98+ ?)

I tried it only on W2k but it workes on W9x,NT too

  • hw dependency – can I use any PCI videocard with current AGP one?
  • any possible problems

I use one AGP card and PCI card. There is no any problems. You have just to
understand what video card is primary in system. Read documentation.

I too. I do not like C++ in system-level development.
SoftICE is a great tool - for Win9x/Me

I use SI on NT platform and I don’t want to use WinDbg at all…
You are not right.

I would agree, missed it several times. What if SI
preallocate a file during
start and allow to save history buffer similar way as BlueSave did?

Yot can save SI history (all TRACEs and etc.) with the help of Symbol
Loader. Just go to menu File->Save SoftICE History as…
But in a case of remote debugging this a looks like a problem.
Albetrto, what would you say?

You have just to understand what video card is primary in

Forgot to point where to read about this…
Just look for command ALTSCR VGA in SI help and everything will be clear

In case that you are not crashed …

But in a case of remote debugging this a looks like a problem.

No problem here just copy and paste from command window.

Basically it’s pretty empty discussion both debuggers not bad and both has
his own problems.
Using both of them also possible (i use both).

The “SET MONITOR n” SoftICE command can be used to flip the popup from a
primary to a secondary monitor, as long as the OS supports it. I’ve used it
in Win2K without any problems, it should also work in Win98+. It’s the full
SoftICE popup, so, it also goes through DIrectDraw. It will run on any dual
monitor system that is supported by the OS.

Secondary VGA monitor support: it should work fine on OSs that support it.
Better than your old mono monitor. Also, some video vendors are coming out
with chips that hog the b000 memory range and the 3bx i/o range, which
effectively precludes the use of a mono monitor.

You’re right but there is always opened question “why to buy SoftICE when
there is WinDbg available for free?” which should be answered sometimes. And
it can be amusing – I received a private mail full of funny assertions as

Well, the nt dev culture at microsoft appears to believe that no real
developer would use a debugger that didn’t look like unix adb or perhaps
sdb, (as in kdb.) Which of course explains why our friend windbag was in
such a sorry-ass state for the two years or so around the end of NT4 and
start of W2K. Nobody who could do anything about it was using it :frowning:

Funny thread this is!
It seems to me like two people discussing about their tool they use.
One favors a hammer the other uses a screwdriver. Now the one with the
screwdriver thinks even nails should the hammered with his
screwdriver. The man with the hammer tells that he also hammers
screws. :-)))

Lets change this thread and discuss the sole and only editor which a
‘real programmer’ should use. ;->
By the way ? Is ‘edlin’ shipped with WinXP ?

NOT supported on XP. This “-kl” option on XP is not debugging. You cannot

We do have a system we call “robo-roam”, that turns access points off and on
periodically. Has helped us find many problems. However, there are issues
that arise with the gradual lose of one signal and picking up one or more
new signals. We can do a lot sitting at our desk, but still need to get off

I had no idea you were speaking of literally roaming from one *wireless*
subnet to another. I interpreted your statement to mean unplug from one
wire, go to another part of the building, plug in another wire. I suppose
if I had looked at your e-mail address a bit more carefully, I would have
guessed that.

Hey, I do ATAPI storage, production-ready live disconnect isn’t a reality,
yet. And when it is, it’s still a wire.

> > PDAs run other OSes then NT.

My point was that mobile devices (NT, Linux, Palm…) need one system
debugging.

Do you mean that the device vendor must supply an OS-independent kernel debugger for them?
Something like Sun’s “Stop-A” or old LSI-11 stuff - the keyboard hit which breaks the machine out of the OS to the ROM monitor (with
the ability of continuing the OS - yes, even as complex as UNIX - after this). Good idea.
Too bad PCs have no such. And they could. The CPU’s System Management Mode can be used for this.

NOT supported on XP. This “-kl” option on XP is not debugging. You cannot
set a break point. (See an example; not an exhaustive list of all the things

Actually, not too long ago we were asked if SoftICE for DOS was still
available. The requester was a large hardware vendor who needed to have a
Windows-independent debugger to put in a bootable diskette and work with
some RAID arrays. Believe it or not, we still ship SoftICE for DOS with the
DriverStudio CD!

And I don’t know about edlin, but heck, I loved symdeb.
