Number of files in a single NTFS directory - practical limits?

Gentlefolk -

My own thoughts on this subject from limited testing performed in house a
number of years ago on Win2K are that somewhere around 4-5K files, the cost
of creating another file starts to raise significantly. At around 7-8K
files, the cost of opening a file starts to become significant. At around
10K files, any application accessing files in this directory of this nature
has severe performance issues.

Question for any of you with opinions on this subject - what has been your
experiences?

Anyone from MS care to comment on FS performance under these conditions?
