I am trying to find some documentations for some functions declared in
ntifs.h such as ZwOpenThreadToken. I need that as soon as possible. I know
that Windows NT/2000 Native API Reference is one reference but it will take
a while to get that book. Any suggestions or links?
Thanks,
IH
I assume from your query that this is the GNU ntifs.h? You should realize
this is a kludged file that does not reflect the current state of the IFS,
for instance ZwOpenThreadToken is obsolete. The author of this file is a
thief, and the file should not be used.

Get the IFS Kit? The ntifs.h included in the IFS Kit is copyrighted
material, and (I think, memory a bit fuzzy) subject to an NDA as part of
the purchase.

You should obtain it from Microsoft. They actually have a program for
universities that allows them to obtain free copies of the IFS Kit.

Thanks Tony. I already forwarded your reply to my department’s tech support.
I hope I haven’t been misunderstood. After reading some parts of the DDK
help, I was reading an open source code and I found the function
ZwOpenThreadToken, ZwOpenProcessToken and wanted to learn about them. I
couldn’t find it in the Windows Server 2003 Driver Development Kit that I
bought two months ago. So I checked Google and it returned ntifs.h and the
Windows 2000 Native API book but no explanations of these functions. That’s
why I asked and I appreciate all your feedbacks.

There is documentation for the replacement funtion in the Microsoft IFS kit.
This is why I guessed you were dealing with the GNU IFS. A lot of us
hesitate to answer these questions on open forum since that is how the GNU
ntifs.h was created, by throwiing together an old ntddk.h with data from
various books and postings.

The author is Bo Branten, the filedisk he offers on is site is stolen from
Jamey Kirby of StorageCraft. The only thing Bo did was remove Jamey’s name
and slap on a GPL. After I pointed out on a forum that the GNU ntifs.h was
crap compared to the real IFS kit, Bo solicted me to send him the ntifs.h
from Microsoft, even though he knew it was under NDA and copyrighted, so he
could improve the GNU version. Bottom line, the guy is a thief who should
be in jail, instead of a person supply code used by a number of open source
projects, which are essentially recieving stolen goods.

Actually, you can for theft of intellectual property. This is truly theft.

There’s very serious analysis of how the current concepts and implementation
of copyrights is seriously broken. I’d recommend you read Lawrence Lessing
and Siva Vaidhyanathan. You might find your opinions seriously challenged.
I’m not one of those wild open software promoters, in fact my work has
included making the licensing terms of one of the most aggressive promoters
of proprietary software more onerous.

Actually, you can for theft of intellectual property. This is truly
theft.
Those who defend it just as bad in my view.

Would it not maybe be a good idea for OSR to open up a new group where we
could feel more free to touch the more sensitive subjects such as the
legitimacy of modifying the service descriptor table and these ?

I won’t argue about the “thief” accusation.
I just wanted to remind that by using the DT command, you can get many
structures definitions without signing an NDA.
For the exported function names, Depends do the job quite well.
Only remains the arguments to be known for a poor guy.

While I won’t argue about this specific case since I don’t know the
details, it has been well established in copyright law that interfaces
needed for interoperability can’t be copyrighted (or, rather, aren’t
protected by copyright, if you want to make a semantic quibble).
Patented, perhaps, copyrighted, no.
Of course, requesting that someone violate an NDA *is* pretty nasty.
