NTDEV List Server Outage -- Sorry!

Our apologies (once again) for the list server outage over the weekend.

In case you’re curious about the sudden spate of network problems we’ve been
experiencing since late November, here’s the story:

Just before the US Thanksgiving day holiday, we installed a SonicWALL
firewall between the list server and the network. This is when our network
problems started. The firewall consistently hung and failed to relay
traffic. We found SonicWALL’s technical support perfunctory to the point of
uselessness. Finally, when the SonicWALL totally failed on Friday and even
email to SonicWALL’s president and VP of engineering failed to elicit ANY
response, we pulled the firewall out of our network and replaced it with our
firewalling router. I think things are now back to normal.

Your indulgence has been appreciated as we work out these network problems.

Regards,

What an ethusiastic recommendation for SonicWall’s products!!!

Just goes to show how important 1st-class support is in addition to having a
1st-class product. A satisfied customer might tell 2 or 3 of their friends and
colleagues… A dissatisfied customer *will* tell everyone they know how bad the
service was. If it makes you feel any better, I had lousy customer
support/service from NetScreen too – another firewall product. Awful, awful
company to deal with in my personal experience…

Why not use MS Proxy Server for those purposes?

MS Proxy Server, while a great product, is not seen as “secure” by those with a
healthy amount of paranoia. I believe that its replacement, ISA is a great
improvement.
The motivator for me with NetScreen is that 3DES is all done in hardware, and is
exponentially faster than any PC based software system. Since the unit is
standalone it does not have the overhead of a regular PC and an OS (and all the
security holes that running on a public OS encompases). Since you don’t need an
NT Server & MS Proxy license it is usually more cost effective.

better yet, why not use a *BSD box with ipfilter and ipnat?
