minifilter altitude allocation request

I see here ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg462961 ) that altitudes are allocated to various companies’ minifilters.

And here ( http://connect.microsoft.com/site221/content/content.aspx?ContentID=2512 ) I found the request form.

My question is this request to obtain altitude required for all minifilters or just the ones which come as a part of windows install dvd. If I’m developing a COTS software product, do I still need to request an altitude?

Thank you.

You don’t “need” to, but if you don’t have an allocated altitude you are likely to have a collision with another mini-filter’s altitude, in which one filter will not load.

If you ship your minifilter anywhere (as in if it’s an actual product and not just some internal test tool that only you use) then you need an altitude. Doesn’t matter how you ship it or if it’s just used internally by your company and so on.

AFAIK the process is rather painless and MS has taken great steps towards improving the responsiveness of it.

Thanks,
Alex.
