Is there any legitimate way for ..

Hi All:

Might be a fsd question …

Is there any legitimate way to ensure that a filsystem filter can not be
filtered
from top ?

-prokash

This is an old question (though I haven’t seen it for a while), bottom line
is don’t do this. Consider your product A requires being on top, then
a new neat product B comes along and it requires being on top, bottom
line is you have unhappy customers!

This is one of those questions, where the best thing is to ask why do you
want to be on top?

Thanx Don.

Pls dont worry about other products, then also either programmatically or by
preserving some configuration can we do this.

If not then also fine, that is why I said legitimately. I will take it
offline later, but not now.

thanx

Whatever you do to try to keep yourself on top can be done by any other
filter. Sound familiar? You can’t win at that game. It is a design flaw.

I had a situation when I had to be on top. I have a FSFD which is a
classical FSFD loaded before file systems, registering file system
callbacks, used for AV file monitor. Some of our customers used ZIP-magic on
their workplaces. ZIP-magic is a software that represents .ZIP archives as
usual folders. It loads its FSFDs after user logon. This means that their
filter are installed on top of mine. And that means, that if an infected
file is in .ZIP archive it can be launched because operations on that file
never get to my filter. Though I found a solution for that, I’d love to know
if there is some clean way for such a scenario.

No, there is sadly no solution to this in the current design.

Yes, while this would be better asked (and answered) over in NTFSD, I think
we’ve got the answer.

Well, William, there are times when Dirty Harry does seem more hospitable.

Well, I’m not sure about William the Dirty Harry. But no one dare to call me
Dirty. Yes I agree that that could have been applicable uptil yesterday.
But not today, I’had my shower after couple days. To be exact after 3 days,
and the temperature here is hoovering around 100F. If any one has a
thermometer, that does not take that far, it is bit comforting for them,
since the modulo might apply. That is why I like those 4 cyldr car that has
a modulo to 100000 miles. if I can keep it clean, and drive that far, I can
sell it by cheating lot of people…

It looks like we have a cultural breakdown guys.

Prokash, Dirty Harry is the name of the famous “tough cop” character Clint
Eastwood played in many famous American movies: Dirty Harry, The Enforcer,
etc…

I would consider it a complement if someone likened me to Dirty Harry
