Internal Modems - Bypassing modem.sys and getting serial.sys on Win2K?

Under Win2000, is there a way to bypass modem.sys and instead access
serial.sys directly for an internal modem? Or is there a way to pass
commands directly through modem.sys to serial.sys?

I have a PCMCIA modem which maps COM4 to \Device\Serial1 in the registry
under \Machine\Hardware\DeviceMap\SerialComm. If I open the device
\Device\Serial1 I actually end up with the device object for the driver
modem.sys. Is there a way to get the device object for the serial driver
instead?

Our driver currently supports external modems and now we are trying to
support internal laptop modems.

Thanks in advance.
