IFS Plugfest #10 [November 11-14, 2003]

Invitation to the file system filter developer ‘plugfest’ at Microsoft’s
Redmond Campus

===============

It is IFS Plugfest time again - the time for File System & FS Filter
Driver developers to congregate at Microsoft’s Redmond campus.

Please note that IFS Plugfest #10 will be held concurrently with and as
part of the Windows Driver Development Conference to be held from
November 11, 2003 to November 14, 2003 in Redmond, WA (please see
details below). The duration of the plugfest will be 4 days. In order to
participate in IFS Plugfest #10, you will need to register for the
Windows Driver Development Conference.

Plugfest #10 will help you ensure that your file system and/or file
system filter driver is fully compatible with the upcoming release of
the Windows operating system currently code-named “Longhorn”. You will
be able to get the real scoop on release plans for the new filter
manager architecture, start converting your legacy filter to a
mini-filter, find & fix bugs in your filter/file-system, and check how
your product interoperates with other products.

Agenda (for the IFS Interoperability portion of the Windows Driver
Development Conference)

=================

Day 1: Companies settle and prepare for testing; test their products
independently on the supplied machines; request test partners for
following 3 days.

Days 2-4: Mini-filter port, interoperability stress test sessions,
scenario testing.

Confidentiality

Microsoft will not publish a general results matrix after the event.
Vendors will only have results of tests between themselves and 3rd
parties; results of each test are provided to Microsoft but Microsoft
will not disclose them to third parties. This is the same as the
arrangement in previous plugfests.

Entrance Requirements For IFS Interoperability Testing Interactive
Session

==

* Your product must include a Windows Server 2003 file system or
file system filter driver that you intend to port to the next release of
the Windows operating system.

* The main developer of the driver must attend the event. We
recommend that an additional driver developer or tester attend as well
to assist in debugging and installation.

* Each attendee should bring a laptop along with a serial
interface for debugging thereby allowing both supplied machines to be
used for running stress

* Microsoft will provide technical resources to help with
interoperability issues. However, the owners of the products are
expected to do the primary diagnosis of problems.

Note that if Microsoft developers are needed to debug a problem, the
i386kd or WinDbg debuggers should be configured and in use instead of
any alternatives.

Please register at your earliest for the conference. Please send me an
email (xxxxx@microsoft) after you have registered, with names of
attendees for my records IF you intend to participate in the IFS
interoperability testing interactive session.

Regards,

Rajeev Nagar
Program Manager (Core File Services)
Microsoft Co.

I remember someone asking about where he was and why there hasn’t been an
update to his book. I hope he has noticed how many people keep asking for a
free copy of the book. BTW, I have a copy and it is NOT for sale.

A few days back when I checked to buy a copy for myself, I was zapped to see that the price was $450 or some really high amount.

Mr. Nagar, if you are listening, it will be nice if you could get the publisher to print a few more copies, I am sure they will be gone in no time. Any plans to come up with second edition? may be this time you get it published through MS Press.

Anyways, does anyone have a copy for sale?, I can’t afford the $450 one.

I am sure atleast a few on this list must have attended the following event at MS in the past.

How was the experience? Is it helpful to get your FS driver tested?

Does MS offer any testing code that can be fired at your FSD, lets say through a driver letter that your FSD exposes?

Before I register, I would appreciate any feedback from folks here who have already attended this event.

Thanks,

Manish

My suspicion is that since he works for Microsoft and has source code
access, his employment contract won’t allow him to write a book. He knows
how NTFS really works and not just the pieces the rest of us have
discovered. I can’t think of any Microsoft employee writing a book, except
for some about GUI development, MFC, etc. The really useful stuff about the
undocumented internals just aren’t revealed.

Mr. Nagar, if you are listening, it will be nice if you could get the

$450! That’s crazy.

I just purchased (ie. last week) a used copy from Amazon. It cost me
around $40 CDN, and shipped really quickly. If I recall correctly, they
(Amazon) had access to quite a few copies, in various conditions.

Nope. My boss works me too hard. So, no time :frowning: No time to even respond
to posts such as these ordinarily (and he is reading this! :)

As regards spilling details about the guts of the system: it is our goal
to put out all information that would make development of stable file
systems and file system filters easier, and maintenance of these much
less expensive. That is what the plugfests are about; that is what the
new filter manager is all about; and, indeed, that is what the driver
development conference is all about. We (yup, “we” means MSFT  have
very knowledgeable people working on writing and enhancing very good
documentation which probably substantially decreases the necessity of a
second edition.

Look forward to seeing many of you at the next plugfest.

Cheers,

  • rajeev

If any information is given at the fest, will those not attending be
able to get that information? For most non US/west european countries, visa
and time will be an issue - so it’s hard to attend.
I’m especially interested in the new framework (I’m still waiting on
reply about that,

I am sure atleast a few on this list must have attended the following event
at MS in the past.

How was the experience? Is it helpful to get your FS driver tested?

Does MS offer any testing code that can be fired at your FSD, lets say
through a driver letter that your FSD exposes?

Before I register, I would appreciate any feedback from folks here who have
already attended this event.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In my experience, this is one of the best developer’s events you could
attend. You get a chance to test your filter driver in combination with
other filters from other companies. All the MS filesystem filter developers
attend the event and give presentations and answer questions. You can even
get MS filesystem developers to take a look at the really difficult bugs
you’re encountering in your FS filter. This event is the only place you’ll
learn the details about things like the new FS filter manager framework to
be put into effect “sometime after Longhorn” (last I heard.)

This is the first time MS is charging money to attend the plugfest, probably
because it’s held in conjunction with the Driver Developer’s conference this
time. It’s still well worth your time.

If you’re testing a file system, instead of a filter, the event is less
focussed on you but still very valuable. You really need to make sure all
those filters people want to run are able to run over your FS (some of the
most important ones won’t, as it turns out). I’ve found it valuable in the
past, and I’m sure it will be this time, as well.

To second Carl’s sentiments below, it’s possible to get questions answered
at the plugfest that you simply couldn’t get answered anywhere else
(possibly not even on this list) just because you’re rubbing elbows with
most of the NT file system talent that there is in the world.

That’s a tough one, Dejan. The entire Driver Development Conference (DDC)
that’s being held that week is being held under a special event NDA.

That’s going to make it tough for ALL of us to share information – I know
this is something we’ve been struggle with regarding The NT Insider, for
example.

Sigh!

Peter
OSR

I’m not asking any attendees to share information, but rather for MS to
provide the information - under NDA is no problem!
