How to set other threads to the alertable state

If the stats and trends are correct, iphone is a falling star. I’ve been
using it since its birth, yes it is very easy to handle. Tons of
application support and it does few thing and does it well.

I can answer that.

I’ve always been an Apple basher, mostly because I am allergic to hype.
Two years ago, my wife bought me an iPhone (against my will). I have to
say, with a begrudging nod, that I now “get it”. This device is
magically easy to use. There is never any doubt about what to do next,
or which button to push, or which buttons do what. The darn thing is
just natural. Having long struggled with designing my own user
interfaces, I now have a great deal of respect for those dudes in
Cupertino.

My wife got a Windows 6 phone for herself, and I was completely lost. I
had no clue where to go next, or how to bring up a menu, or even how to
get back to the dial pad. We returned it. If the manual is more than a
pamphlet, the phone has failed.

Are you saying the iPhone is a falling star? I think you’re wrong.
Android already has twice the market share of the iPhone, and I think
that is likely to continue for quite a while. Windows is likely to suck
up the share currently held by Symbian and Blackberry, but that’s just
scrambling after the leftovers.

So if Apple has succeeded by selling devices that are more funcion specific - is the pre-emptive multitasking operating system overkill for all but the 1% of us?

Phones: I can do anything with my WM6.5 phone - and even with the bad rep that it has (WM6.5), I really do love it. I’m not sure what an iPhone can do that this phone can’t - except that I seem to be the only one of my friends and family with the ability to make it do anything.

Apple devices do crash even more often then Windows PCs.

That’s provably false, but please let us not get into the same kind of
fact-free religious dogma that used to follow any mention of Linux on
this list.

Not just the ISVs, also the IHVs. There’s a lot of hungry HW cos :). And
that is exactly Android is exploiting.

Since symbian is dead, I’ve some hope for win phone now, let’s see

I still have a Newton on the shelf somewhere… Also a “Fat MAC” and
original Macintosh programmer’s documentation.

Long ago I wrote software for the Mac. I left the Apple fold for a number
of
reasons. On being that when they achieved a modicum of success they began
incorporating software that was initially third-party into the OS in a
pretty wicked way. Basically, they closed the door on software developers
except for games and other fairly inconsequential stuff (IMHO).

Humm, sound familiar???

Anyway, I suspect that the iPhone and iPad are really great products! But
my
unjustified prejudice will keep me from buying one. I will keep my DroidX
(Unless MS gives me a WM6.5 phone…) and wait for XOOM Wi-Fi only to
come
down to reasonable price.

What about NTTALK - it seems to be pretty quiet these days…

Apparently.

Let’s see… We COULD talk about whether you think Unity is better than GNOME, and whether Natty sucks as bad as El Reg says it does.

Or, staying closer to home, we could discuss whether Paul Thurott has been made a fool of (more than he usually does so of himself) with a bunch of Photoshopped junk that purports to be Windows 8 screen captures.

Here’s an utterly ridiculous idea: You could take a swing at the
fascinating subject of throttling your memory usage when the system is
telling you it’s getting low.
http://www.osronline.com/showThread.CFM?link=202674

1. Static vs. dynamic allocation throttling - It’s easy to put a
counter in and then stop allocating when the counter reaches your limit, but
that’s a recipe for under/over-utilization.

2. How to get the OS to tell you it’s getting low. Alternatively, how
to ask the OS it’s getting low.

3. What to do when you’ve determined that you want to give back
memory.

Or you could continue to debate the number of electrons it takes to shock a
pinhead. Or something like that.
