How to extract files for a Vista partial checked build...

ALL:

Does anyone know a way to extract the NTOSKRNL & HAL from a WIM
compressed image that does not involve more or less starting a new
CHECKED installation, saving the files, and then bailing out, which is
the only thing I have been able to come up that does not utilize tools
that I can’t seem to find. I’ve seen a number of references to a tool
called both XImage and ImageX, but can’t seem to find out from where one
acquires it. I feel like I must be missing something, because there is
no reason I can think of why this stage of the process should be
complicated; I’m OK with the necessary BCDEDIT issues.

Thanks,

MM

The tool is part of the WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit). If the
Vista build has a WDK with it, the kernel and hal are in the debug directory
of the WDK. Unfortunately, if you need something more than the kernel and
hal, such as NDIS.sys or the FLTMGR you are out of luck. The WAIK is huge,
and I find the time to install the Checked build and grab what I need, is
similar to the time to download the WAIK!

I believe the ImageX.exe (like part of dtm) tools are part of the 5472 WDK
DVD.

There is a driver that allows to you mount (from XP/W2k3) a .wim file as a
volume and read/write to it.
