It’s just the way that the ? command displays the output, value in decimal
on left and value in hex on the right:

.formats makes it a bit clearer:

Evaluate expression:
Hex: 00000100
Decimal: 256

Note that the C++ evaluator (which you get when you ??) always uses decimal
as the default and does not honor changes made with n:
