Guys,
I need some firewire cards (PCI) for WinDbg debugging, and the one available
on OSROnline are out-of-stock (with no information on when they will be
available again).
Any advice on models and chipsets that are proven to work reliably? And
where to buy them (Fry’s/BestBuy/Amazon/whatever)?
A good PCMCIA would also be useful…
Thanks again

The one’s that I use when I at a client’s site and am limited to what’s
available at something like BestBuy are any of the Adaptec Connect
series of cards that contain 1394 only, and are PCI based. The last
time I tried their PCMCIA version, it did not work, but that was about
three years go. If you can buy ahead of time online, someone on this
list who has researched this more than I can almost certainly tell you a
better option than these, as they are outrageously overpriced, but, if
you’re talking about a small number purchased on the spot at a large
scale retailer, they do have the advantage of, at least in my
experience, you can rely on them consistently working even though you
may not know what the chipset is.

Any card with TSB12LV2x (x is a digit) chip from Texas Instruments. This
means - it is compatible with OHCI1394 driver and thus with KD1394.

Go online and look at various 1394a cards. If they give a picture look for
the VIA or other mark on the chipset and don’t buy unless you can see the TI
mark. A few say which chipset they use. Call the manufacturer and ask.
Don’t bother going to Fry’s, Best Buy or the other big stores as I have
never seen a TI chipset based card there. Some chips are covered with a
sticker so it is possible but no one there will know for sure.

As I suspected…
I’ll try and see if I can find something useful on the web. The problem is
that most board vendors do not tell you which chipset they use. Some of them
say “OHCI compliant”. Will it be working with the OHCI1394 driver? good
luck.
Thanks for the help!
Have a nice day
