I’ve noticed on XP (2600) that 8 bit only displays (256
colors) may not
be “supported”.

I have a (really) old video card with only does 8 bit graphics.
XP will (eventually) install, but the only available mode
is 640x480.
(We won’t go into the apparent fact that XP assumes the
bios will support
24
bit graphics). Also, the display settings applet looks a little
“funky” (only 640x480 and no other entry on the slider).

Additionally, I notice that all other installations on
other graphics
cards (which support 8, 16, 24, 32 bit modes) do NOT allow
the display
mode to be set to 8 bit (it used to in NT4 and Win2K).

Further, XP notes that old games (8 bit graphics games) can be run
in ‘compatibility’ mode.

So, question is - has 8 bit graphic mode been “dropped” from XP?
The “minimum requirement” literature spoffs about “SVGA graphics”
as a minimum, but that can be 8 bit. Anyone know for sure?

Hey, I wanted *your* name on the email, not mine?

But you know you really do need one of those spiffy new nvidia cards that
cost more than every other piece of hardware on your system, except the
monitor, combined. You have to do your part to get the economy rolling
again. What? No AGP? Toss that motherboard out the door.
Upgrade/churn/consume!

Hey pete, I avoided the obvious response!

According to www.pricewatch.com, you can get a Geforce3 for under $200.

Nope. You would be buying some castrated geforce3. The GeForce3 Ti 500 is
closer to 400. But your kids will love and respect you for another few
weeks.

I wouldn’t call a 64Mb video board “castrated”. And my kids are too old to
play computer games.
