FS Reprint finally available...

I saw it on my desk over the weekend in its little shrink-wrapped package - the reprint of the NT File Systems Internals book - and it now seems to be available in the OSR store (http://www.osronline.com http:</http:> - see the little store link in the left hand column near the bottom of the list.)

I have this bet with the marketing guy that we’ll sell out of the initial press run (something like 75 copies - he doesn’t think anyone wants a copy of something this old) by the end of the month - so if you want a copy, help me show him that I’m right and he’s wrong by ordering one for home, one for the office and one for the car ride back and forth between the two.

And now that I’m not trying to fix problems with the reprint (oh, like the ? day fire drill to fix *one page* of one chapter where the drawing wasn’t in the PDF document - sounds simple, turns out to be annoyingly complicated - which is somehow appropriate for a file systems book) I can turn my attention to working on the update.

Sorry, I was working with a PDF that was generated from the original
frame maker files; I really didn’t want to touch the original files if I
could avoid it (you know, once you touch it, you break everything in the
chapter, and then once you fix ONE chapter you have to go fix them all
because you had to replace the fonts with the closest version you could
get.)

I don’t believe we’re going to provide a downloadable PDF version of the
book, since that makes bootlegging it even easier than it is already
(and let’s just say that OUR pdf of the book is a tad bit better than
the bootleg “I scanned in the pages of the book” version.) You know how
us big corporate monster like companies are - no doubt our legal
department is already salivating about going after all those bootleg
copies floating around inside corporations with deep pockets and
conservative legal counsel…

And once again, my ability to hedge pays off. I merely said “I don’t

Given sufficient commercial impetus and the technology and I’m sure our

Why not just go for the printed book? I find electronic documentation
almost absurdly difficult to use and hard to get to. I do use MSDN,
but the volume is so great that the book equivalent would be
staggering. Even Windbg’s doc is several hundred pages. I do wish
the searches would return more desirable information with less
unneeded stuff, but it works somewhat. I think the File Systems book
is not a reference but more of a tutorial and a hard copy is much
easier to handle, I think.

I think there are some cracks for some of the protection methods, but
I don’t know for sure that Adobe’s current PDF has been broken. One
method would be to produce a unique copy for each purchaser that can
be traced back if it was copied. You could be real paranoid and have
the reader phone home each time it is read. You could implement
something similar to Microsoft’s shared source system with smartcards.

OR…Just a book.

Tony,

I hope you placed a significant wager on this bet. I saw the book was
listed for sale 3 days ago and according to the site it was out of
stock. I was -9.
If I interpreted the info provided in the ordering process correctly,
OSR was sold out prior to you posting this thread, any idea how long it
will take the print shop to serve up a new batch of copies?

I’m sure I could email sales and ask them what the time frame would be,
but given your probably right down the hall and would enjoy some early
‘gloating’ rights, I’ll ask here.

hand column near the bottom of the list.)

I have this bet with the marketing guy that we’ll sell out of the
initial press run (something like 75 copies – he doesn’t think anyone
wants a copy of something this old) by the end of the month – so if
you want a copy, help me show him that I’m right and he’s wrong by
ordering one for home, one for the office and one for the car ride
back and forth between the two.

And now that I’m not trying to fix problems with the reprint (oh, like
the ½ day fire drill to fix **one page** of one chapter where the
drawing wasn’t in the PDF document – sounds simple, turns out to be
annoyingly complicated – which is somehow appropriate for a file
systems book) I can turn my attention to working on the update.

Tony

Matt,

I think the negative number is just because nobody there has yet figured out how to “load inventory” into the storefront (in other words, “-9” probably means they’ve sold 9 copies since they started with zero.) Even without being anywhere near the office at the moment (you don’t think they allow me to spend time there do you?) I know our inventory control system is not real-time, nor have we managed to sell out yet.

As for being down the hall, you don’t think they allow me in the office do you? (I fixed that one bad page from a hotel room, in fact.)

Well, I imagined they had you chained to a desk. If not that, perhaps an
electronic shock collar around your neck to make sure you didn’t
wander off.

After all, companies do have to protect their assets.

I’m not sure what the number means, but it indicated -13 when I ordered yesterday.
If Matt’s order was before mine we are counting up, otherwise we are counting down.

Of course, it said the item was backordered and would ship when it was in stock.

I have it on good authority that a shipment of books went out yesterday, and if you ordered last Saturday it should have included yours. But, then again, it sounded like they’d made a significant dent in our stockpile.

Since it’s too late for me to sign your book, you’ll have to traipse down to Edinburgh in the spring when I’m supposed to teach my brilliant debugging class (I can be bribed with pints of good bitter…)

Oh, and they tell me they have told the store we have a large, almost infinite supply. It’ll never tell you that we’re out of stock again.

Yes, it is a bit like the shock collar approach. Problems arise once you
are OUTSIDE the containment barrier though…

Or maybe you just overvalue their opinion of me around OSR.

Tony

Well, I imagined they had you chained to a desk. If not that, perhaps an
electronic shock collar around your neck to make sure you didn’t
wander off.

After all, companies do have to protect their assets.

Magic - I just received email to confirm order has shipped.

I seem to be unable to find a spring debug class in edinburgh at
http://www.osr.com/seminars_schedulelisting.shtml
:frowning:

“Tony Mason” wrote in message news:xxxxx@ntfsd…
I have it on good authority that a shipment of books went out yesterday, and
if you ordered last Saturday it should have included yours. But, then
again, it sounded like they’d made a significant dent in our stockpile.

Since it’s too late for me to sign your book, you’ll have to traipse down to
Edinburgh in the spring when I’m supposed to teach my brilliant debugging
class (I can be bribed with pints of good bitter…)

Oh, and they tell me they have told the store we have a large, almost
infinite supply. It’ll never tell you that we’re out of stock again.

Tony
