Forcng windbg running on a win 98 pc to use com 2

Hi all,
I set up windbg on a win 98 PC and tried to do some kernel debug of a win 2k
service pack 4 PC connected via a serial cable.

win98 com 2 to win 2k com 2
This appears not to be working as I am unable to force the 98 PC to use com
2 for windbg
It would like to use com 3

Inside the win 98 PC we have 2 com ports on the motherboard and an internal
modem installed.

Com 1 is a used for a serial mouse and com2 is available.
com 3 appears to be in use by the internal modem.

com 1 and com 2 are both enabled in the bios

Motherboard is an Intel TC430HX

Can I force windbg when running under win 98 to use com port 2 for kernel
debugging ?
My current attempts cause a cannot open com2 error 0x05 when I select the Go
command.

You first need to find out what has occupied COM2 in the 98 computer and
shut that process down. If you can’t open the com port, it’s not
“available”. You’re not running wdeb98 from the 98 autoexec.bat, are you?

Hi all,
Further info on the problem
From win 98 command prompt I am able to do a mode conn command
and the port shows up on the device manager list / display of devices /
drivers load in the PC.
Removing and rebooting correctly detects the com port , reinstalling the
relevant driver.

Connecting a another PC via the serial cable to the w2k PC shows that the
serial cable and w2k serial port is working correctly.

Any other suggestions which would cause this problem on the win 98 PC
hypertem is happy to open com port 2 and start a connection.
conclusion. either a hardware fault with com port 2 or a conflict of irq
I don’t think we have a problem with the connection from the mother board to
the serial cable/ connector.
Motherboard TC430HX

thanks
