File ids, how are they generated

Hi All,

How are file ids generated and how to get file id for a file from
application / Driver.

Does all the File systems support this file ids?

Any information is helpful.

File Ids can be anything a file system wants, for unix, this is usually
the inode number, for ntfs, it is an id from the MFT (i believe). As
far as I know, not all file systems support open by file id. It was
mostly used for File Services for Mac and File Services for Unix.
