From the spooler’s side - No.
I am not suggesting Samba be modified by you, just that its RPC
interface be turned off.

Hi Ashwin,
I do understand that SAMBAs implementation makes Windows think that it
is a NT server.
However can I configure the spooler to work in POLLING mode in Windows
NT/2000/XP.
Please note that it will be difficult for me to change the SAMBA
implementation. How come then it works on Windows 98 ?
Please throw more light into this.
Regards,
Santhosh

Yes, the spooler does support polling mode. However, the Samba server is
implementing a fake version of our RPC protocol that makes us think it
is an NT Server - hence we expect it to also support notifications and
we don’t go into polling mode.
The Samba server should either implement the full protocol, or not
pretend to be an NT server.
If the Samba server can be made to support SMB only for NT clients, this
would also fix the problem.

Subject: [ntdev] Does Spooler on Windows 2000 support POLLING mode
Hi,
I would like to know if the spooler on Windows NT, Windows 2000 and XP
support POLLING mode.
What we are finding is that the spooler on the above platforms is based
on notifications only… to view the Queue information (for print jobs).
Scenario
I using SAMBA to share a printer from a Unix platform (Unix acts as a
PRINT SERVER). When I fire a print job from Windows NT/2000 CLIENT, the
print job queue is not automatically refreshed on the Windows Print
Manager (Spooler window). Only when I press F5 (refresh), I will be able
to see the print jobs on the spooler window. Looks like the spooler in
Windows NT/2000 is operating in a NOTIFICATION mode.
On a Windows 98 (client) the jobs are automatically refreshed as I feel
that it is operating in a POLLING mode.
IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN CONFIGURE THE WINDOWS NT/2000 spooler to operate
in POLLING mode or what is the right solution.
Regards,
Santhosh
