different behavior in Windows 2000 and Windows XP for unsigned driver

Hi, all:

I have a virtual COM driver built under DDK 2000, it
is installed and works fine on Windows 2000, I don’t
see the driver signing warning during installation.

On Windows XP, I see the driver signing warning and
ignore that during installation, then the driver works

fine. However, after reboot, there is a “Found New
Hardware Wizard” which says “Cannot Start this
Hardware”, “There was a problem installing this
hardware” and “Windows cannot determine the settings
for this device” etc.

What I need to do? I thought drivers working on
windows 2000 should be compatible with XP. Any input
is appreciated.
