And I notice it is over twice the price in the UK.

From my visit to the UK in Mar 06, I have the experience that nearly
everything
is twice the price in the UK compared to the US or to Moscow (very
similar prices).

I’ve never been to UK. So if folks in US making 100 grand would likely
make 200k in UK?

Hardly. We’re talking about gross generalizations here, and I apologize
if I offend someone, but I think you’ll find that the typical standard
of living is a bit lower in the UK. You just don’t find middle class
families of four in 2200 square foot homes with 4.5 televisions and 3.5
cars.

When I visited Edinburgh in 2005, I noticed the price of petrol was
about 90p per litre. It only took a little bit of mental arithmetic to
realize that was US$6 per gallon. I didn’t get any sympathy at all when
I complained about the price of gas in the US shooting up to $2.50 per
gallon.

The result is not that people earn more money. The result is that
people live close to work, commute by bicycle, or use public transportation.

What was that catchphrase? “Maybe we should take this to NTTALK…”

No, it just means that the UK is a very expensive country, and their
standard of living is lower then the US one.

NTTALK of course, but having family in both countries, I disagree about
that standard of living thing. My brother and his family live a nice
comfortable life in the British Isles and as he notes, they could not
begin to afford to live in this country.

Hahahahaaa! I wish!

Anyways, surely, what you actually mean (given the current exchange
rate) is that folks making $100k in the US should make £100k in the UK
… and hence retail prices as a fraction of wages should be the same.

Unfortunately, it don’t work like that, but I am reliably informed that
in the US there are other costs that take a bit out of your salary that
are not an issue in the UK. So it’s all relative.

The one good thing for a UK person is that taking holidays magically
makes everything cheaper

MH.

Yes.

Correct. The price difference is one thing. Another is lack of space -
in terms of population density.

I’m living in a two bedroom flat at the moment 2 bedrooms, combined
living room / kitchen, and a bathroom. All of them average by UK
standards and small by US standards. It’s near the centre (but not in
the centre) of cambridge.

However, it’s currently valued at about £280,000 = over half a million $ US.

All other things being equal, I reckon you could probably get (or build)
a 4/5 bed house in some parts of the states for that with no problem.

I didn’t get any sympathy at all when
I complained about the price of gas in the US shooting up to $2.50 per

Yep. I used to have a propensity for doing 90+ down the freeway a few
years back … that got curbed when I realised I could pretty much drive
along and count the £££ being burned …

The result is not that people earn more money. The result is that
people live close to work, commute by bicycle, or use public transportation.

What was that catchphrase? “Maybe we should take this to NTTALK…”

I think NTTAlk would be a good idea.

US.

Yes, and in many parts of the UK too. Living near the centre of nice cities
like Cambridge is expensive! (I know, I used to).

But I only meant the OP as a warning: Amazon should not be charging > double
the US price for this book. Also UK sales tax (VAT) is zero on books.

If lived in the UK now I would simply buy it from the states and pay the
postage but living in Portugal I have to contend with officious customs who
will require me to pay maybe 100 USD to a private company to clear it from
outside the EU (or visit the port myself and spend a few days filling in
forms)! By the time I ship it through England it will not save me a lot.

But you can bet that the Amazon price hike is not going to the government or
the authors. Anyone guess where it goes?
